16 percent of Americans own a smartwatch – TechCrunch

The latest figures from the NPD show a steady increase in smartwatch sales here in the US. The category was a rare bright spot in a generally designated, portable space, and the new numbers are showing gains across the board. In fact, the percentage of smartwatch owners among US adults in December is 16 percent. Compared to the previous year, it was 12 percent.

Unsurprisingly, it's a recent demo that drives this growth – especially 18- to 34-year-olds, where the share of smartwatch is around 23 percent. Of course, Apple and others have been seeking similar purchases with the older crowd. This is due to a more serious health function, as last year an ECG meter was added.

Apple, Samsung and Fitbit continue to dominate the market and account for 88 percent of nearly $ 5 billion in revenue generated for the year ending in November. However, companies such as Fossil and Garmin achieved some market share. Of course, Google will seek a bigger bump in the market with the purchase of Fossil IP. The growth of Wear OS was quite flat, but that could change in 2019 with the supposed arrival of Pixel Watch.
