2021 Polestar 2 drives with 408 hp and vegan interior to the Geneva Motor Show

Volvo's electrified power Polestar will soon launch a beautifully designed 600-horsepower plug-in hybrid coupe . But for me it's just a hell of amusement. This 2021 Polestar 2, on the other hand, is the all-important main dish, the model commissioned with the Tesla Model 3 .

Debut on Wednesday before greeting the public at Geneva Motor show next week, the Polestar 2 is the brand's first mass production offering and the first all-electric vehicle. Starting with the number 2, every Polestar product requires pure electrical energy.

The Polestar 2 platform is deployed on the Volvo Car Group's Compact Modular Architecture (CMA) platform ̵

1; the same bone on which the XC40 crossover is based. A battery pack with 27 modules is integrated in the bottom, and the total capacity of the battery is 78 kilowatt hours.

The 78 kWh battery powers a pair of electric motors, each mounted on each axle, for a total of 408 hp and 487 lbs. Foot torque According to Polestar, the twin-engine setup accelerates the 2 to 62 mph in less than 5 seconds.

Official reach details are not yet available, but Polestar says it targets 275 miles under US-specific EPA testing. (For the European test cycles WLTP and Chinese NEDC Polestar estimates a range of 500 km.) This puts Polestar 2 just behind the twin-engined Tesla Model 3, whose estimated range according to EPA 310 is miles.

If you're curious how the 2021 Polestar 2 competes against an admittedly far-reaching competing set, including the Tesla Model 3, Jaguar I-Pace and Mercedes-Benz EQC Here's what we know .

The high-grip four-door liftback has a kind of Volvo S60 cross country feel.

While there are no specific details to populate the battery, Polestar says the two choose "an intelligent, convenient and comprehensive approach" when loading. "Polestar is building strategic alliances to give Polestar 2 owners easy and hassle-free access to the world's largest public charging networks," the company said in a statement.

Polestar will offer an optional performance package that is more focused on handling than linear performance. Öhlins dampers and Brembo brakes give the twosome's on-road manners a bit more charisma, as do special 20-inch wheels wrapped in lower-profile tires. The performance models will be equipped with gold seat belts, calipers and valve caps.

Aesthetically, the Polestar 2 takes many accents from the Volvo 40.2 Concept which debuted in 2016. The Liftback design for better access to the cargo hold and with its somewhat high-leveled attitude has almost a Volvo S60 Cross country character. Neat exterior details include pixel LED headlights (which unfortunately do not enter the US or Canada due to regulatory restrictions) and frameless side mirrors. You can not see it on any photo, but the company says that a lit Polestar logo is also reflected on the car's panoramic roof.

The beautifully designed interior is equipped with vegan upholstery.

Inside, the 2 looks exactly as expected from a Volvo-made product. Clean surfaces and attention to detail make for a modern and luxurious cabin. For people who have been disconnected from the button-less, all-in-one screen design of the Tesla Model 3 this could certainly be more appealing.

Cabin materials look like lush leather, but not "We've designed a vegan standard interior with progressive textiles," Polestar's design boss Maximilian Missoni said in a statement.

The Polestar 2 will be the first vehicle to use the new Google Android platform from Volvo Cars Infotainment System housed on a vertically oriented 11-inch display (as if someone had an iPad on the dashboard let it lie). More information on this infotainment system will be available in the near future, but for the time being, Polestar says that this software will provide Google Assistant compatibility with natural language control as well as Google Play apps.

The production of Polestar 2 officially begins in 2020, with both left-hand and right-hand drive cars being produced in China. For the first year of production, Polestar will only offer the Launch Edition, at a price of $ 63,000 (or $ 55,500 with the current federal tax incentive). The non-launch edition will follow shortly and costs $ 55,000 (or $ 47,500 with tax credit). An even cheaper single engine option will be available later, and Polestar says the pricing for this model is still to be decided.

Polestar will sell the 2 only through an online order or through a soon-to-appear subscription service, similar to Care by Volvo . Pre-order is now available at Polestar.com.

The 2021 Polestar 2 will arrive in the USA in 2020.
