8 Galaxy Z flip features you should try first

Spilled-screen apps aren't new, but the Galaxy Z Flip's screen makes them a little more useful. We set the phone at a 90 degree angle with YouTube in the top half and a CNET story in the bottom half.

The Samsung Galaxy Z Flip foldable phone was released on Friday just a few days after its official announcement at the Samsung Unpacked Event in San Francisco . It appears in the stores one week after the Motorola Razr – another clamshell phone with a foldable screen. The Razr and the Galaxy Z Flip have a lot in common, but are also very different phones. Together, they represent some of the biggest changes in form factor that have been seen in cell phones for years.

If you're lucky enough to get your hands on a shiny new Galaxy Z Flip, there are plenty of amazing features to discover, like the tiny 1.1-inch pill-shaped external display and Flex mode. However, there are some Android 10 settings that you can change to further optimize the Z Flip, especially for better one-handed use.

Take a second and wipe the stains off your Galaxy Z Flip and then take a moment to try these features.

Turn the Z flip fingerprint sensor into a scroll wheel.

The Galaxy Z Flip should be used with one hand. Even though Samsung's OneUI 2 interface makes it easier to interact with buttons and windows, it can still be difficult to reach the top of the screen for notifications. Fortunately, there is an Android setting that turns the fingerprint reader on the side of the phone into a capacitive scroll wheel to pull down the notification drawer.

To activate this function:

1. Go to Settings.

2. Tap Advanced Features.

3. Choose Movements and Gestures.

4. Then turn on the slider finger sensor gestures .

When your phone is open, slide your finger down from the top of the fingerprint sensor to pull down the notification drawer. Perform the same movement a second time to display the control panel. Swipe up on the sensor to close the control panel and drawer.

Take a selfie with the power button.

When the Z Flip is closed, you can double tap the power button to open the outside camera for a selfie. The tiny 1.1-inch pill-shaped screen shows a cropped live preview.

To take a photo, either press the volume key or raise your palm to the camera to trigger a camera timer and countdown. [19659007] Master the Small External Display

In addition to being able to frame selfies when you close the phone, the small external display has several other uses. Tap the power button to see the date, time, and battery status. Swipe right on the screen to view notifications. Tap one of the icons to see a short portion of the notification. When your phone is charging, the display shows the percentage of the battery and gives you an estimate of how long it will take for your phone to be fully charged.

<h2> Flex mode turns the Z Flip into a baby laptop. </h2>
<p> The Galaxy Z Flip's hinge is stiff enough to stay open in any position. If you have opened the phone about halfway, Samsung has optimized some apps to use the display. For example, if you open the YouTube app in Flex mode, your video will play in the top half of the screen, while comments will appear in the bottom half. </p>
<p> Other ways to use Flex mode: </p>
<ul>
<li> Create Google Duo video calls. </li>
<li> In the Gallery app, scroll through the photos in the lower half of the screen like a trackpad. </li>
<li> Take a selfie hands-free. </li>
<li> Use it as a tripod to take photos, videos and hyperlapses </li>
</ul>
<h2> Z flip-split screen apps </h2>
<p> The large 6.7-inch screen with an aspect ratio of 21: 9 is perfect for the display of Android apps with a split screen, one app on top of the other. </p>
<p> . 1 On the home screen, swipe up to see recent apps, or tap the Recent apps button on the navigation bar. </p>
<p> . 2 Select the app you want to display above and hold the app icon. </p>
<p> . 3 After a moment, a menu appears. </p><div><script async src=

. 4 Tap Open in split screen.

5. Next, select the second app you want to display below.

. 6 Once you're in split-screen mode, you can hold down the separator bar to change the size of each app.

Enabling gestures for better one-handed operation

I noticed that traditional Android navigation is being used. The gesture bar made it easier to use the Z Flip with one hand.

To activate gestures:

1. Go to Settings .

. 2 Tap display .

. 3 Choose Navigation Bar .

. 4 Next, choose Full Screen Gestures .

To use gestures, swipe up from the bottom of the screen to get home. Swipe up and hold to see recent apps. Swipe right or left on the screen to return.

No tripod is required. Simply place the Z Flip in a 90 degree position and it acts as a separate base.
