Microsoft Surface Duo is here, and that means you can finally get your hands on the Android-enabled foldable phone for $ 1

Microsoft (MSFT) has built two – screen, foldable Android phone (toget, togetL). There is nothing like it on the market. Sure, there are foldable ones Phones and dual-screen phones, but Microsoft has combined the two concepts incredibly well, albeit with hiccups.
The software is a bit picky at times, though it has come a long way after an early software update Microsoft released for the phone. Performance can feel slower than leading phones. and his camera system is faulty.
But man, for a first generation device designed to dramatically improve handheld productivity, the Surface Duo has what it takes to be a revelation.
Unique design with two screens.
Fantastic for productivity.
Easy to use in multiple modes.
Competitively priced with other folding phones.
The Surface Duo is designed like a book and has a glass-coated outside that serves as a cover when closed. It has a fingerprint reader in one edge and a shiny chrome hinge that connects the screens on the other.
Open it up, however, and you’ll be greeted by the duo’s two 5.6-inch PixelSense displays. According to Microsoft, the two make up the phone’s 8.1-inch PixelSense Fusion display.
When closed, the duo is surprisingly slim, just a bit larger than an iPhone 11 Pro – and even thinner when open. So if you are concerned that this will take up space in your pocket, forget about it.
It’s weird not seeing your screen, but it’s also a relief to avoid having notifications appear after the notification pops up. And if you want, you can fully open the duo with its 360-degree hinge and always have both displays available.
When using the Duo in this way, you’ll need to choose which panel to use. Special software in the phone can determine how you hold the phone and light up the screen you are looking at. If it doesn’t, you can double-tap the display you want to use.
You can also use the duo in tent mode to watch movies, or keep apps like Slack or Teams open throughout the work day to make sure you don’t miss any of your co-workers’ notes.
What makes the two screens so impressive is that despite a small air gap separating them, depending on the app, you can drag and drop content between them. So if you have something in Outlook that you want to paste into Word, you can just highlight it and drag over it. It’s not available in all apps yet, but I hope Microsoft works with enough developers to make this happen over time.
Sometimes the duo couldn’t tell which orientation I was holding it in. Still, you can’t deny the benefits of using different apps on two separate screens at the same time. I could make changes to articles in one area and reply to Slack messages in the other. I also scrolled Instagram while streaming old episodes of “It’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia”.
There are a lot of advantages to using such apps. Since the duo is based on Google’s Android, you get full access to millions of apps via the Google Play Store.
You can also expand apps to spread across both displays, giving you more space to work. For example, Outlook lets you browse your inbox on the right screen and read a full-size message on the left.
But you will also use the duo as a standard smartphone. So what is it like? Let’s start with the camera.
The camera is located in the phone and is doubly suitable for selfies and normal photos. So you need to open the duo before you can start taking photos. The duo also had a hard time determining if I was trying to take a selfie or a photo of a subject, resulting in an overly large close-up of my face mug.
AAPL) iPhone 11 Pro maxor even googles $ 349 pixels 4a. The duo just weren’t able to capture that much detail, and as a result, the images looked fuzzy and out of focus. “Data-reactid =” 154 “> The photo quality was below average compared to Apple’s (AAPL) iPhone 11 Pro Max or even Google’s 349-dollar pixel 4a. The duo just wasn’t able to capture so many details, and as a result, the images looked fuzzy and out of focus.
Overall performance felt fine, but I did notice some lag in taking photos, which was surprising considering the duo use Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 855 processor and 6GB of RAM.
On the positive side, the duo’s battery life was impressive and lasted all day with no problems until the next one.
At $ 1,399 and still flawed, the Surface Duo looks more like a demonstration of what Microsoft is planning for its smartphone future. It’s similar to what the company did with its original Surface line, bringing the idea to market, perfecting it over time, and finally bringing out a damn good product that could rival anything else in the market.
Right now the duo is a tough sell. However, Microsoft deserves credit for taking a great risk. And hopefully the company will pay off those risks just as they did with the original surface.
