The Ultimate Ears Megablast is some of the best Bluetooth speakers you can buy, but disgruntled owners turn to Twitter to complain about the speaker’s Alexa functionality.
Twitter user Ben Morgan (@bmorg) noted that despite a factory reset, Alexa is no longer working fully on her Megablast speakers – and they are not alone:
@ultimateears What did you do with the Megablast firmware that caused Alexa to just stop working? It’s generally been fine for a year and suddenly it doesn’t work at all even after doing a factory reset. Not happy. August 30, 2020
Mine are still broken. I̵7;ve had them for over a year, they’ve been great up until then. We need @ultimateears to fix their #firmware. I can still stream over bluetooth but nothing from Alexa even though the app says it is connected. The silence from UE is very annoying !!! 🤬September 10, 2020
In a statement sent to TechRadar, Ultimate Ears confirmed the problem, saying, “We are aware of the problem and are working to find a solution. We will update you as soon as we have a solution.”
The audio company, known for its portable and waterproof speakers, has yet to confirm why Alexa isn’t working on the UE Megablast – although it has been speculated that a firmware update was to blame, we couldn’t verify this. In any case, we will update this article as soon as Ultimate Ears releases a solution.
What can I do if my speaker stops working?
One of the UE Megablast’s biggest calling cards is that it features Alexa voice assistant smarts. This means that you can use the portable speaker to control your smart home devices and play your music on the go.
Voice assistant integration is still relatively rare with portable speakers, as both Wi-Fi connectivity and Bluetooth are usually required. However, smart speakers that you can use on the go are becoming more common as models like the Sonos Move become more popular.
While Ultimate Ears doesn’t provide a solution to the problem just yet, there are a few things you can try if your speaker doesn’t work with Alexa.
Make sure you have the latest software installed on your speaker. To do this, go to the Ultimate Ears speaker app and make sure the speaker is connected to your device via Bluetooth. From there tap on “More” and you will be able to see if there are any updates available to download.
Of course, it’s still unclear whether a firmware update is even responsible for the Alexa problems – and these updates are irreversible. So if you’re not having any issues right now, it may be worth waiting for Ultimate Ears to confirm the source of the issues before committing a software update.
You can also try resetting your speaker to factory settings (although some users have reported that this didn’t solve the problem with Alexa). This will erase all of your Megablast’s settings, including Bluetooth storage, Wi-Fi settings, and your Amazon / Alexa credentials.
To do this, press and hold the volume buttons ‘-‘ and the power button at the same time for six seconds. You will then hear a tone indicating that the reset is complete.
Then you have to switch the loudspeaker on again with the power switch and carry out the setup process.
