Amazon Music now offers podcasts. The company released an update today that brings more than 70,000 shows to the platform, including some key titles like serial number and Pod Save Americaas well as new exclusive offers like a show with DJ Khaled The firstwhere he interviews artists about their breakthrough hits and the stories behind them. Disgraceland, a popular iHeartMedia show, will also be available exclusively for the platform from February 2021.
Podcasts can be listened to using the updated Amazon Music app, on the web, or on Amazon Echo devices. Echo devices search Amazon Music by default and remember where listeners left off, regardless of the platform they̵
The Wall Street Journal reports that Amazon will be selling ads for its shows, although it is unclear whether that means DJ Khaled and other hosts are reading ads and whether paid subscribers are hearing these ads similar to Spotify.
This of course now makes Amazon Music even more of a competitor to Spotify, a company that has already invested heavily in podcasts. Apple Music is now the premier music streaming app that hasn’t yet integrated podcasts. Apple operates Apple Podcasts, but has separated the two, although podcasts and music are combined across platforms to diversify catalogs and make apps the go-to places for all audio needs.
The Amazon Music podcast update is particularly interesting as Audible recently announced the newest and cheapest subscription that allows listeners to access exclusive podcasts. These shows are apparently not included on Amazon Music. If people want to hear an Audible show, they have to register separately. Amazon Music now includes shows that are available on all platforms, which is what sets it apart from Audible right now.
