Respawn Entertainment launched Apex Legends a week ago, and it has taken a respectable seven days since then. The studio has today shown that it has surpassed a total of 25 million players for the free Battle Royale. The shooter had more than 2 million concurrent players at the height of his first weekend.
Apex Legends has an unprecedented start for Electronic Arts and Respawn. The only comparison points in the game are Fortnites and PlayerUnknowns Battlegrounds.
"We see activities and commitment around Apex Legends, which we have not seen as another game except Fortnite," said Adam Sessler, co-founder of analytics company Spiketrap.
Apex has risen from 1 million to 1
I've been waiting all day to tell you this madness … @PlayApex hit 25 million players this morning. Read more about that at the link below. Attracting gamers to a freely playable game is a challenge. Many developers and publishers spend a lot of money on "user acquisition," which forces these companies to adopt aggressive business models in order to make a profit over an extravagant marketing budget. But Apex Legends attracts so many people through organic means, word of mouth means Respawn should have a lot of catching up to do when it comes to finding capital.
Respawn is already hard at work adding news to Apex Legends. As part of its announcement today, the studio announced some upcoming events.
Starting tomorrow, Feb. 12, Respawn and Twitch will be working together to host the Twitch Rivals Apex Legends Challenge. This is a sponsorship tournament with 48 Apex Legends streamers competing against each other and you can watch it live on the Apex Legends channel.
The studio also plans to introduce Valentine's Day toiletries that match the holiday.
However, the biggest novelties will come in March with the launch of the first season of Apex Legends. This will introduce the first premium progress pass, new characters, weapons and more.
