For months before today’s annual Apple event Rumors whirled around that the Cupertino tech giant was preparing to bundle its growing range of services. Apple today confirmed that it is rolling out a tiered bundle called Apple One that will bring together some of its most popular services with additional cloud storage.
There are three main subscription options: Individual, Family, and Premier. The family and individual plans combine Apple TV +, Arcade, Music, and iCloud storage. The custom plan – which comes with 50GB of cloud storage – is $ 15 per month, while the family plan is $ 20 per month and 200GB. (The family plan can be shared with up to six family members.) Meanwhile, the first plan, which costs $ 30 a month, will bundle all four of those apps with Apple News + and its newly announced and highly anticipated apps Fitness + appthat cost $ 10 a month or $ 80 a year alone. The Premier plan includes 2 TB of iCloud storage and can also be shared with up to six members of the same family.
Apple One is offering new users of these apps a 30-day free trial if they haven’t already subscribed. And like six people can share a single account with family or the Premier plans, Apple says the package allows each family member to use their own credentials to access their accounts and settings.
Apple has taken a hard look at its service offerings and launched a number of new streaming products in a breakneck clip. Apple TV +, Arcade, Apple News +, and even Apple’s most recent foray into Personal finance are all meant to compete directly with app giants in their respective spaces. However, by offering everything from health tracking to native music streaming on its devices, and by making these premium services competitively priced, it can also further lure Apple users into its own ecosystem. For example, why should I pay for a non-native music streaming service when Apple Music has everything I need and hands-free navigation with Siri commands while driving?
However, Apple still has a few issues to solve. The original hub, Apple TV +, is still limited to content. A problem that Apple is working on by offering its subscribers exclusive bundles recently did with services CBS All Access and Showtime. Apple Arcade has to compete with more popular mobile apps from established game manufacturers. Apple is catching up in many ways. By creating tiers that group outlier services along with the tentpole apps, Apple may only be able to bring in some subscribers who would otherwise conduct their business elsewhere.
Make no mistake, Apple knows exactly what it’s doing.
