Apple has officially announced its 2020 flagship iPhones: the iPhone 12 Pro and 12 Pro Max with support for 5G and a new, angular design reminiscent of the iPhone 4. It’s also the first major redesign for Apple’s full-screen smartphones since 2017 introduced the frameless design with the iPhone X.
Both the 6.1-inch iPhone 12 Pro and 6.7-inch iPhone 12 Pro Max are larger than the 5.8-inch iPhone 11 Pro and the 6.5-inch iPhone 11 Pro Max the previous year. In particular, the 6.7-inch iPhone 12 Pro Max is known for the fact that the crown is the largest Apple phone to date. The Pro models have a stainless steel design (instead of the aluminum on the iPhone 1
The new iPhone 12 Pro models will feature Apple’s A14 Bionic chip, which was first introduced on the updated iPad Air last month. According to VP Greg Joswiak, this was “the most powerful chip Apple has ever made”. The new chip is the first from Apple to use a 5nm process (instead of the 7nm process used on last year’s A13 Bionic). According to Apple, both the new 6-core CPU and the 4-core GPU are the fastest ever. According to the company, the performance is up to 50 percent faster than any other phone.
One of the biggest innovations in this year’s models is 5G. The iPhone 12 Pro supports both Sub-6GHz and mmWave 5G, which means that both phones should work on all different types of 5G networks from all three major US carriers. Apple says it has “the most 5G bands of any smartphone,” promising it will support a wide range of cellular carriers around the world and their various 5G standards.
Also new – and exclusively for the iPhone 12 Pro models – is a LIDAR sensor, which, like the iPad Pro, is used for additional AR effects. According to Apple, the LIDAR scanner is also used to focus in low light conditions, which makes autofocus up to six times faster for pictures in low light conditions. It also enables portraits in night mode.
The new iPhone 12 Pro models also feature “Ceramic Shield” technology, which Apple says offers glass that is more robust than any other smartphone display and offers four times better “drop performance” to prevent your phone from falling cracks when dropped.
Like the iPhone 11 Pro models from last year, Apple also offers a triple camera system with 12 megapixels, telephoto and ultra-wide-angle camera lenses on the iPhone 12 Pro.
The iPhone 12 Pro Max expands the camera system even further. There is a new 12MP telephoto lens with a focal length of 65 mm, which can optically enlarge up to 2.5 times. There is a new wide-angle camera with af / 1.6 Apeture and a new OIS system. The wide sensor is also 47 percent larger, which together with the lower aperture results in 87 percent better low-light performance.
Apple also teased a new feature called “Apple ProRAW” that will be available on the iPhone 12 Pro and 12 Pro Max later this year. The company announces that it will offer existing computational photography benefits such as Deep Fusion and Smart HDR, as well as the flexibility of RAW photos. The format will be available for all four cameras, allowing users to adjust things like sharpening, color highlights, and more while taking advantage of Apple’s existing photography enhancements.
The new iPhone 12 Pro phones can also record HDR video, a first for the product line, including support for direct recording in Dolby Vision HDR. The iPhone 12 can also edit Dolby Vision HDR videos directly from the Photos app.
Like the iPhone 12 and 12 mini, the two iPhone 12 Pro models will be compatible with Apple’s newly announced MagSafe wireless chargers and accessories, which include magnetically attached cases, charging pads, and even accessories like wallets.
In addition to the two flagships, there are two more new iPhones. The iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 mini, which are set to replace last year’s iPhone 11 model, can be found here.
