Smartphone leaks and rumors have become a much bigger business than in the past, say 10 years. One company we’ve seen most often as a victim of fake rumors has to be Apple, but that has changed in recent years. With this article, we thought it would be fun to go back and see which rumors about the iPhone 12 models were correct (spoilers: a lot of them) and which ones were completely overlooked.
Starting in 201
The following size comparison table was created by MacRumors back in July.
It was originally believed that only one or two iPhone 12 models would support mmWave 5G networks. Last month, it was thought that only the 12 Pro Max would mmWave, while reports well before that indicated that the Max and non-Max iPhone 12 Pro models would support the higher 5G frequencies. Ultimately, all four iPhone 12 models will support both sub-6 GHz and mmWave 5G connections.
Although we didn’t know what it was at the time of the leak, we now know that a leaked prototype magnetic wireless charger was actually the newly announced MagSafe magnetic charger. Apple announced a new accessory ecosystem that can be aligned with magnets for both iPhones and compatible cases and third-party car accessories.
In addition to MagSafe, we also overlooked the fact that wireless charging would increase the speed. Under certain conditions, the new iPhones can be charged up to 15 W or 20 W wirelessly.

Early CAD drawings of the new iPhones from early April coincide with the final design of the phone. With the exception of the camera layout on the Pro Max, the model renderings of these CAD drawings were spot on. The render was even tinted dark blue like the latest standout paint Apple announced for the iPhone 12 Pros.
We expected the iPhone 12 Pro Max to have the most advanced camera of any new model, but what we missed this year was the Pro Max’s newly updated telephoto camera, updated to 65mm (equiv). Lens from the 52mm (2X) lens of the 11 Pro Max.
Otherwise, based on our article “What to Expect”, we even got the right prices from this weekend. The new iPhone 12 Mini starts at $ 699 and the iPhone 12 Pro starts at $ 999 with twice the storage capacity.
The element of surprise has almost disappeared with smartphone launch events. Leaks and reports have reached a point where we already know what the phone will look like. We saw videos of dummy models, practical photos, prototype shots, and even price breakdowns.
Every now and then we might see a new detail about the announcement that everyone missed, but even then, it usually ties the rumors together so it’s not entirely mind-boggling.
