Apple today announced its iPhone 12 lineup. Rumor has it that all four models come without EarPods or power supply. Starting today, the iPhone 11, iPhone XR and iPhone SE will no longer include these accessories either.
The Apple website encourages customers to use their existing Apple power adapter and headphones, or to purchase these accessories separately. To offset the cost, Apple cut the price of its Lightning connector EarPods from $ 29 to $ 19. Apple’s new 20W power adapter for iPhones also costs $ 19, compared to $ 29 for the now-deprecated 18W power adapter that was previously included in the iPhone 11 lineup.
Pointing out the environmental benefits of not including EarPods or a power adapter with iPhones, it noted that the move will reduce carbon emissions and avoid the mining and use of rare earth elements. iPhone 12 models are therefore also supplied in a thinner box. Apple claims that 70 percent more iPhone boxes fit on a single pallet during shipping.
Apple added that many customers have switched to wireless headphones like AirPods, and said there are over two billion Apple power adapters worldwide, meaning many customers no longer need these accessories.
Last month, the Apple Watch Series 6 and Apple Watch SE were launched with no power supplies in the box. So it’s not surprising that iPhones have followed suit. However, for the time being, all iPad models are still included with power supplies.
