Apple is entering the 5G market with a new line of iPhones

Apple on Tuesday unveiled a revamped line of iPhones capable of 5G network speeds and promises to usher in a “new era” for its flagship product.

The four new 5G smartphones are set to offer customers a range of options as the $ 2 billion company moves into a vacation quarter that is expected to sell more than 80 million phones.

“Every decade there is a new generation of technology that is fundamentally changing the capabilities of our iPhones,” said Tim Cook, CEO. “The next generation is here.”

The new iPhone range is rounded off by two Pro models, one with a 6.1-inch display and a Pro Max model with 6.7-inch – the largest display for an iPhone to date.

All four models have a new hardware design with flattened edges. This is the first phone design change since the iPhone X in 2017. They are also the first cell phones to use chips made using the state-of-the-art 5-nanometer manufacturing process.

Apple stock, which rose 6 percent on Monday, fell 2.7 percent on Tuesday, suggesting that investors were disappointed that the company was lacking long-rumored accessories like over-the-ear “Studio AirPods” and Introduced tracking tags for lost items.

The only major hardware product revealed beyond the iPhone was the HomePod Mini, a smaller, oval-shaped home speaker with Siri that sells for $ 99. According to IDC, the Market Intelligence Group, Apple only has a 1 percent market share among smart speakers.

Analysts believe the 5G phones will trigger a massive upgrade cycle as customers typically own their devices for around four years. Although 5G infrastructure is not yet widespread in many regions, phones choose 4G when it isn’t available or to conserve battery power when speeds aren’t required.

While Apple’s first 5G phones come more than a year after rivals Samsung and Huawei, it could help make the network more mainstream.

Coinciding with the launch of the phones, Verizon’s CEO Hans Vestberg announced that the company would launch its 5G network on Tuesday, after rivals T-Mobile last December and AT&T this summer. “5G is real now,” he said.

More than 100 cellular operators in more than 35 markets would be wearing the 5G devices when the first new iPhones were released later this month, Apple said.

However, the iPhone 12 Mini and the most expensive Pro Max model wouldn’t go on sale until mid-November after the coronavirus pandemic production hit production earlier this year.

“The introduction of 5G technology to the iPhone lineup gives people an important reason to upgrade and makes buying an iPhone a future-proof purchase this time around,” said Ben Wood, an analyst at CCS Insight.

Apple now has a wide selection of phones for the holiday season, from the cheaper iPhone SE released earlier this year to the $ 1,399 Pro 12 Max with 512GB of storage.

“Apple has a very clean portfolio of devices that give consumers a good, better, and best choice,” said Wood. “It’s not that easy with competing products because there are large product ranges with many small differences and a multitude of designs and functions.”
