Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. (TSMC), which produces Apple A-series chips, plans to build an advanced chip factory in Arizona. The Wall Street Journal reported. The facility would manufacture 5-nanometer transistor chips for TSMC, which the company has tested with customers in Taiwan in recent months, the report said.
TSMC’s board of directors decided to set up the facility at a meeting earlier this week in Taiwan, and may announce their plans officially on Friday WSJ. The plans are for the factory to begin producing the chips by the end of 2023. It is not yet clear what financial incentives the company can receive from the state or the federal government, but it is WSJ reports that the government and trade departments are involved in the plans. In addition to Apple, TSMC Nvidia and Huawei are among its customers.
