Apple Watch sales accounted for half of the smartwatch market in 2018

Apple Watch held its own on the smartwatch market in the fourth quarter of last year, as global smartwatch shipments continued to grow, according to Strategy Analytics' latest research.

Apple shipped 9.2 million Apple Watch in the fourth quarter of 2018. The report said it increased 18 percent from 7.8 million in the fourth quarter of 2017. Smartwatch's global shipments increased 56 percent annually, to a record 18 million units in the same quarter.

Apple's global smartwatch market participant actually fell from 51

% to 51% this quarter, while Apple remained in first place with 51% global smartwatch market share, while Samsung leapt to second and Fitbit and Garmin passed.

The study confirms an earlier report by the US market research firm The NPD Group that Apple Watch is the "clear leader" in the US smartwatch market, but also highlights the growing threat from rivals like Samsung. This continues to invest heavily in wearables that are compatible with Android devices and iPhones.

"Apple's global smartwatch market has dropped to 51 percent this quarter, down from 67 percent a year ago," said Neil Mawston, Executive Director of Strategy Analytics. " Apple Watch is losing Marketshare to Samsung and Fitbit, whose competing smartwatch portfolios and retail footprint have improved significantly over the past year."

Apple does not show Apple Watch revenue from the overall result. In a recent earnings announcement for the first quarter of fiscal year 2019, CEO Tim Cook said sales of the company's wearables would be driven by the "amazing popularity" of the Apple Watch and the AirPods' approach to the size of a Fortune 200 -Unternehmens.
