Apple Watch Series 6 offers breakthrough wellness and fitness features

Blood oxygen sensor and app

The Apple Watch Series 6 adds a new feature to the health features of previous Apple Watch models that conveniently measure the oxygen saturation of the user’s blood so that they can better understand their overall fitness and wellbeing. Oxygen saturation, or SpO2, is the percentage of oxygen that red blood cells carry from the lungs to the rest of the body and how well this oxygenated blood is shed throughout the body.

To compensate for natural skin changes and improve accuracy, the blood oxygen sensor uses four clusters of green, red, and infrared LEDs and the four photodiodes on the Apple Watch̵

7;s rear crystal to measure the light reflected from the blood. Apple Watch then uses an advanced custom algorithm built into the Blood Oxygen app that is designed to measure blood oxygen between 70 and 100 percent. On-demand measurements can be taken while the user is still, and regular background measurements are taken when they are inactive, including while sleeping. All the data is displayed in the health app and the user can follow trends over time to see how their blood oxygen levels are changing.
