In a Twitter message from home, Apple CEO Tim Cook announced that the company has procured and will donate 10 million face masks. The number is a significant increase over the two million reported last week and a significant increase over the nine million vice presidents Mike Pence announced at the White House press conference last night.
"Apple has procured, sourced and donated 10 million masks to the US medical community," Cook said in the video. "These people deserve our gratitude for all the work they do on the front line."
Apple and other technology companies are donating masks in a national shortage as COVID-19 increases toll on the toll US population. Many of the donated masks have been stored to meet California's occupational health and safety standards that came into force after the devastating wildfires last year.
Other companies such as Ford have converted production facilities to create additional masks.
