Best 4K TV for 2020: LG, Vizio and TCL compared

4K resolution It used to be an expensive step-up feature only available with a high-end television. Today, almost every TV with a screen size of 32 inches or larger is available in 4K at prices essentially the same as older 1080p lower resolution TVs. And if you’re buying a 50-inch screen or larger, it’s hard to find a model that will do that is not 4K.

The best 4K TV screen could be cheaper than you think. The popular TCL 4 series, which I really like as an entry-level option, starts at a cheap TV price of $ 230 for the 43-inch model. The 65 inch version has fallen below $ 500.

7;s the thing: 4K resolution on a screen doesn’t necessarily mean you will get great picture quality. All of those extra pixels – 8,294,440 to be precise – don’t have much of an impact on how good the picture looks. The most powerful televisions in our reviews and the best tv for the money excel in other areas of image quality, such as contrast, Dynamic range and HDR performance. They also have 4K resolution, but that’s basically a table these days.

The list below highlights the top 4K TVs (the, let’s face it, the best tv, Period) I went to the CNET test lab where I compare them side by side to see which are best worth buying. Of course, I took into account factors such as picture quality, whether the device is a smart TV, whether the picture changes depending on the viewing angle, and how the TV interacts with a streaming device. Here are my latest recommendations, taking note of the following pointers.

  • Unless otherwise stated, all prices shown are for 65-inch models.
  • Are you looking for a specific screen size? Check out: 32-inch TV, 43-inch TV, 55-inch TV, and 65-inch TV 75 inch television.
  • 2020 has was a strange year and many new televisions are shipping late. Some of the TVs on this list are still 2019 models, but await a review more 2020 television soon.
  • On the other hand since Televisions are generally a mature technologyThe new models may not include any major upgrades from the 2019 versions. Most buyers will still be perfectly happy with a 2019 TV, especially since they are generally cheaper.

No TV I’ve ever tested offers so much picture quality for this little money. The 2020 TCL 6 series offers even better picture quality than its predecessor thanks to mini-LED technology and well-implemented local full-array dimming, so that it can orbit almost any other television at this price. It’s also a great choice for gamers with a new THX mode that combines low input delay and high contrast. As if that wasn’t enough, the Roku TV operating system is our all-time favorite.

What is it you say You only want the best television, money not an object? May I help you. In my side-by-side tests, the 2020 LG CX is the best TV I’ve ever tested and barely surpasses the 2019 B9 – which, like other 2019 OLED TVs, is largely sold out these days.

TCL’s 8 series also has a mini LED. The result is excellent contrast, brightness and a high dynamic range that outperforms the cheaper 6 series in my side-by-side comparison. The overall image quality doesn’t quite match OLED ratings, but it comes pretty close and costs a lot less, especially at the 75-inch size.

Apart from the TCL 6 series mentioned above, no other TV offers so much picture for this little money. In my comparisons, the TCL won slightly in a few important areas, especially HDR brightness and contrast, and black levels. I would recommend the TCL to streaming-centric viewers too because of its superior Roku Smart HDTV system. It’s great for watching Amazon Prime, Netflix, Hulu, Apple TV, and more. And finally, it’s a 2019 model, so you might want to wait a bit for my upcoming 2020 version reviews – although this TV is being released a lot these days.

Sizes: 55-, 65-in. Read our review of the Vizio M-Series Quantum M8 (2019).

Roku is our preferred platform for viewing content with live TV streaming apps Netflix. It’s an even better experience when they are built into the TV. This TCL 4 series Ultra HD TV can’t beat any of the above models for picture quality – its 4K resolution and HDR compatibility don’t add to the picture – but for most people this is a perfectly okay price.

Sizes: 43-, 50-, 55-, 65-, 75-inches. (The price below is for the 43-inch size.) Read our TCL S425 Series (Roku TV) review.

I’m pretty sure you’ll be happy with any of the TVs above, but a new device can be a big investment. Maybe you are looking for a little more information. Here’s a quick and dirty list.

  • New 2020 TV models have mostly arrived, but since Televisions are generally a mature technologyThe cheaper versions of 2019 usually offer better values.
  • Bigger is better in my opinion. Big TVs are cheaper than ever, and your money is best spent on big screens rather than slightly improving the picture quality.
  • If you don’t like the built-in smart TV system, you can always add a media streamer. They’re cheap, easy to use, and get updates more frequently than most smart TVs. Check out our pick of the best media streamers.
  • Most built-in speakers sound terrible, so it’s worth pairing your new device with a soundbar or other speaker system. Good ones start at around $ 100. See the best sound bars.
