“Bionic eye” connected to a chip in the brain can cure blindness



It’s been more than 10 years, but scientists are preparing to implant a “bionic eye” into a human subject.

Researchers at Monash University have developed wireless implants that sit on the surface of the brain and are designed to restore vision to the blind.

Called the Gennaris bionic vision system, the device includes a custom headgear with a camera and radio transmitter, an image processing unit and software, and a set of 9×9 millimeter tiles that are implanted in the brain.

Studies with the device, which has been used on sheep, have proven successful and have not shown any adverse health effects.

The team is currently seeking funding to advance the manufacturing and distribution of the implant. They could soon be used to cure other diseases, including paralysis.

Monash University started developing its “Gennaris bionic vision system” more than a decade ago, a “world’s first” brain implant to restore localization – and it is being prepared for human trials.

In preclinical studies, the team implanted 10 devices in sheep using a specially designed insertion system.

Stimulation was delivered through the seven active devices for up to nine months, and more than 2,700 hours of stimulation were delivered with no observable adverse health effects.
