All Hail Holly, winner of
Fat Bear Week 2019 and our hearts.
After a week of head-to-head competition, finalists 775 Lefty and 435 Holly faced each other in a battle to be called the thickest and most complete bear in Alaska's Katmai National Park and Preserve. And readers, people have spoken.
The park announced that the Internet, following a vote on Tuesday on the Facebook page of the park, has voted Holly the thickest bear of all. I mean, just look at these results:
Now, in its fifth year, the gives Fat Bear Week Ursine enthusiasts around the world have a chance to vote on the bear, whom they consider particularly committed for the coming winter. It's not just about celebrating profits. These absolute units rely on their fat reserves to keep them in hibernation.
Every spring and summer, viewers watched in real-time as the Brown Bears of the Katmai National Park and Conservation Area romped on all the salmon and berries of the Brooks River that they could possibly devour. And every year in the fall, a group of remarkably lush bears vies for the fattest bear's acclaimed award, which fans voted for on the park's Facebook page .
This year Holly – a chubby beauty – has been called the "Queen of Abundance" because she is able to pack the pounds she needs to stay healthy in the coming cold months.
On Tuesday, our newly crowned queen opposed Lefty. The before and after photos show that both bears have gained tremendous weight since emerging from their burrows in the spring. By autumn, these two curvy miracles had expanded to twice the size. But in the end, only one could claim that crown, and it was Holly – whose transformation is truly inspiring, as her many, many revered fans noted.
Bow to this fat, beautiful bear, your champion of Fat Bear Week 2019 and my only queen.
