For eligible US taxpayers, the IRS’s first economic reviews are expected to take place in mid-April. If you expect a stimulus payment of up to $ 1,200 you may be wondering when your check will arrive and whether you can track your IRS payment status. Good questions. As far as we know, with future updates as we learn more about the plans of the IRS and the Treasury.

These one-time payments are part of a $ 2 trillion 2020 Coronavirus Aid Package that is designed to help you pay your expenses or help boost the weakening economy because of people due to the coronavirus pandemic lose their jobs and close shops. Without a calculation it is not clear how much you can get. Your final allowance depends on a line on your tax form that is either different from your taxes for 2018 or 2019. You can follow our guidelines or use a calculator to find out, but a little bit of footwork is inevitable.

Another fold is when exactly you get the check – the amount is automatically displayed in either your bank account or physical mailbox (more below).

(And if you have not yet submitted your taxes and need a refund soon, you should file taxes by April 15th despite an automatic tax extension.)

Coronavirus stimulus tests: Everything you need to know

The stimulus checks will arrive in mid-April.

Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin said the first stimulus payments will go out within two weeks, around mid-April, for those who have made a direct deposit to the IRS.

The stimulus money will either go to your bank account if you make a direct deposit to the IRS for previous refunds during the tax season, or by mail to your registered address.

If you'd like to set up a direct deposit to receive your payment directly into your bank account, the IRS has an online tool that allows you to set up electronic payments by mid-April.

Although we know when to expect the first checks, we don't know how long it will take for the IRS to process a check for each eligible taxpayer, which could be over a hundred million.

You do not have to log in to receive a check.

In order to receive the stimulus payment, you may need to file a 2018 or 2019 tax return if you are normally asked to do so. You can still do that now. That's how it works .

Seniors, social security recipients, rail pensioners and other beneficiaries who do not normally have to file tax returns do not have to submit to receive payment.

Can I check that? the status of my payment?

This is not yet clear. For federal tax refunds, the IRS has a refund status page where you can review the status of your refund after providing your social security number, registration status, and the amount of the refund.

The IRS does not currently have a similar tool that you can use to track the status of your stimulus payment. We currently do not know if the agency will create an online tracker.

We will look for more details on the IRS's special coronavirus page in the coming weeks and update this story with new information when the IRS creates such a tool.

In the meantime, you need to know the following about the new expansion of the federal tax return . For more information on stimulus checks, see how to best use your stimulus check and to avoid fraud . Here you will find everything you need to know about Coronavirus and unemployment .
