Common problems with Huawei Mate 20 Pro and how to fix them




You have your Huawei Mate 20 Pro in hand, but there is something that you are not sure about, or a problem that just doesn’t seem right. You may not be alone and there may be one or two gremlins in your Mate 20 Pro. Here is our summary of the most common issues reported on Huawei’s otherwise very impressive phone.

Problem: Write authorization on SD card that does not work for third-party apps

Some users who post to the XDA Developers Forum have reported problems transferring files from their Mate 20 Pro to an external SD card. This problem occurs especially in some cases after upgrading to EMUI 1

0. Huawei and Google apps can still transfer files to an SD card, but some third-party apps cannot.

From the posts in the forum it is not entirely clear what causes this and whether there is a single solution that is guaranteed to work in all cases. According to Huawei’s own comments in its official forum, it is actually a design feature that has been implemented to “ensure smooth system performance and data security”. However, users have suggested the following possible fixes that may work in certain cases.

Possible corrections:

  • Use Mixplorer or other root explorer apps, which are third-party Android file managers. Some users report that these apps work for them.
  • Downgrade back to EMUI 9. This is a complicated process where your phone’s data will be erased (you need to back up first) and should only be done if you really, really need to use third party file explorer to get files to one Transfer SD card. As described on the Huawei website, the latest version of HiSuite must be downloaded. As soon as you have downloaded HiSuite to your computer, connect it to your Mate 20 Pro, start HiSuite and click Update> Switch to the other version. You may need to go to your Mate 20 Pro’s settings and turn it on Allow HiSuite to use HDB before you do this.

Problem: NFC is not working

We saw some complaints in the Huawei forum and the XDA developer forum about problems with NFC and especially about payments via Google Pay that are not working properly. This does not seem to be a problem with EMUI 10, only with EMUI 9. However, if you are still working with EMUI 9, there are several possible problems here. So do the following:

Possible corrections:

  • Update to EMUI 10.
  • If you rooted your Mate 20 Pro or unlocked the boot loader, this may result in mobile payments no longer working. The installation of an Android beta can also affect banking apps.
  • Turn off your Huawei Mate 20 Pro and hold the button power and Increase volume Keys together. The phone should load the recovery menu and you can use it Volume down to the highlight Clear cache partition and press the power Button to select it. When it’s done, choose Reboot system now.
  • If your problem is specifically related to Google Pay, uninstall the Google Pay app. Then restart your phone, install the Google Pay app and set it up again.

Annoyance: The volume is low

There were some reports of volume issues with the Mate 20 Pro in the XDA Developers Forum and on Reddit. Some people believe that the volume is generally too low. This is also a problem that has been reported for EMUI 9 without online reports linking it to EMUI 10. Try updating to see if that resolves the problem. If not, try one of the possible solutions:

Workarounds:

  • If you have a problem in landscape view, it may be because the main speaker is turning down the volume to switch to stereo sound. Look in here Settings> Sound and make sure that Stereo + is switched off, then test again.

  • Low volume may be related to the headphones or the USB-C adapter you are using. Look for a 3.5mm USB-C adapter with a DAC (digital to analog converter) chip.
  • You can find volume booster apps like this one in the Play Store. However, we advise caution, as high volumes can damage your hearing and possibly destroy the speakers.

Problem: green screen color

Several cases of people complaining that their phone screens have turned a shade of green that is only going to get worse have surfaced online since the phone was launched. Often most clearly visible on a dark background image or in poor lighting conditions, the green hue spreads where the side of the phone curves and can extend over the top of the display. Huawei has posted a statement on this issue on its support website, indicating that the phone can be used in low temperatures. It is recommended to take the following steps to improve the situation:

Possible solution:

  • Go to Settings> Display> Color & Eye Comfort> Color Mode & TemperatureThen touch or drag the dot on the color wheel or touch Warm or Cold to set the color temperature to a preferred level. Huawei recommends setting the color temperature to a cooler color for a better experience.
  • Turn off eye comfort mode and see if the problem is resolved.
  • Deactivate night mode and increase the screen brightness. Huawei states that this can reduce the shade of green.
  • If the above solutions don’t work, contact your Huawei service center, your network, or the supplying retailer if there is a hardware problem, as this should be covered by the warranty. Visit the Huawei website for information on which is closest to you.

Malfunction: fingerprint sensor in the display

New technologies can often be problematic, and while the Mate 20 Pro’s built-in fingerprint sensor is one of the better, it isn’t perfect and can become less reliable over time. If your fingerprint sensor tries to unlock your phone a few times, it is best to re-register your fingerprint. However, this is another problem that has not been reported recently. Therefore, it may also be worth updating it, since Huawei has released updates that have improved the fingerprint sensor since the launch of the Mate 20 Pro.

Possible solution:

  • to open the settings Walk on your Mate 20 Pro safety, then Fingerprint ID and enter your security code. Then select the enrolled fingerprint that is causing the problem Clear from the list that appears at the bottom of the screen. You will be asked to add a new fingerprint or, if not, to choose New in-screen fingerprint from the available options.
  • If you have installed a screen protector, this may affect registration or use. If possible, remove it and scan your fingerprint again. Problem: Notification icons are not displayed

The Huawei Mate 20 Pro has a notch at the top of the screen and the available display on both sides is not very large, so that only the permanent symbols such as battery, time, network signal, Bluetooth and NFC have space. Sometimes app and other notifications may not appear. Turning off the notch under “Settings” does not solve this problem. Fortunately, this doesn’t seem to be a current problem, given the activity on the Huawei community forums. Therefore, updating the phone may fix it.

Possible solution:

  • Update your phone to the latest version of EMUI.
  • This is a problem with Huawei’s EMUI user interface beyond Android 9.0, and every notched Huawei phone is affected, not specifically the Mate 20 Pro. There is currently no solution other than giving feedback to Huawei. The company is listening to this and changes may occur in a future version of EMUI.

Problem: Missing functions for artificial intelligence in the video

Artificial intelligence has been used to improve still images on Huawei phones for some time, and the Mate 20 Pro also extends the video with AI features. It is possible to blur the background, isolate a specific color on the screen, or even add live filters to the footage. If your Mate 20 Pro does not have these features, you are most likely running an outdated version of the firmware.

Possible solution:

  • Firmware 9.0.0.122 or 9.0.0.126 adds these functions depending on the location, device specification and network. Check the version your phone is running on by going to Settings> System > Via phone. If it is earlier than one of the versions mentioned above, go back one step and tap Software update to prompt the device to check whether a newer version is available.
  • The release of new firmware depends on your network and location. If not, be patient as updated firmware is usually sent in batches. Make sure you get the update immediately by tapping the menu button in the top right corner Software update Screen, then turn on the Automatic download via WLAN Possibility.
