Confirmed: The PS5 is the largest game console in modern history

When internet detectives announced that the PlayStation 5 was going to be huge, we were utterly amused – but even their fancy photoshops couldn’t fully prepare us for just how huge the PS5 really is.

About half an hour after Sony announced the price and release date of the next-generation console ($ 399 or $ 499, Nov. 12), the company released a full datasheet detailing the console’s dimensions. And it’s a monster.

Quick, what’s the biggest console ever made? Did you say the original 2001 Xbox or the original VCR size Xbox One? Maybe the 60 GB PS3, affectionately called “Phat”

;?

Not correct. The PS5 is bigger than any.

According to Sony, the PS5 is approximately 390 mm (15.4 inches) tall, 260 mm (10.24 inches) deep and 104 mm (4.09 inches) wide. This makes it the biggest game console you’ve probably ever heard of. The model without a drive? Same story, just 12 millimeters slimmer.

I put the numbers in CompareSizes.com to see how they pile up on consoles that we previously derided as absolute chonks:

Left to right: PS3 60GB, Xbox, Xbox One, PS5 Digital Edition, PS5
Visualization: CompareSizes

There is hardly any comparison. The PS5 is so much bigger that it can’t even be said that the 3D perspective is losing its actual size. I’m pretty sure that you will have to go back in the days of slot machines with built-in CRT TVs or computers like the Commodore 64 to get much bigger.

And boy, boy, is this box bigger than the new Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S:

Note that the 3D tool does not align the back of each console. The PS5 is so much deeper than any Xbox.

I don’t even have to tell you which console is which. It is obvious. Do you remember when we worried whether the new Xbox would fit into our entertainment centers?

Oh, and there’s a little tidbit I forgot to mention which makes this even better: Sony doesn’t consider the “largest projection” or optional base of the PS5 in these measurements, according to the press release.

Do you see those yellow and blue boxes? Now imagine some fins sticking out at the top.

Here is a 3D visualization of all seven consoles, the dimensions of which I plugged in if you want to rotate them on themselves. And in case you’re wondering, the PS5 also weighs 4.5 kg, or around 10 pounds. If you drop the drive, you will drop to 3.9 kg.

Mind you, I loved my 60GB PS3 despite its size, and I doubt I’ll think any differently about the PS5. The rest of the datasheet is pretty impressive too!

I’ll leave it below for you to read.
