Access to Control: Ultimate Edition allows owners to upgrade to the next-gen version of the game for free
control Publisher 505 announced in late August that current owners of the basic version of the game would not get a free upgrade for the next generation iteration. Control: Ultimate Edition. Instead, they have to spend more money to play a game they already own on new hardware. It should be noted that all versions of the control will be backwards compatible on both PS5 and Xbox Series X, but will not take full advantage of the hardware of the new systems.
A blog post explaining why an owner of the basic version of the game cannot upgrade to the next-gen version of the game for free was also published last month. In it the publisher declares 505 that he owns the base game of control and his Season Pass is not the same as owning the Ultimate Edition of the game, which has the same content but in one package. Therefore, an upgrade path is simply not possible for owners of the previous one, since “The upgrade path we offer is only possible when upgrading from the same version of the game.”
Although it now seems like that’s not entirely true. A thread yesterday on Resetera describes the experiences of several owners of controlThe Deluxe Edition, which won’t be available on next-gen consoles either, found that their version of the game has been updated on Control: Ultimate Edition. This only happened to PS4 owners of the game and only in certain regions. When visiting the PS Store page for Control: Ultimate EditionThese players found that instead of downloading the game, they could put it in a digital shopping cart and instead download it instantly. controlThe Digital Deluxe Edition has apparently also been removed.
Apparently this was a bug when players downloaded Control: Ultimate Edition in this way soon lost access to it. However, this bug contradicts what 505 said about upgrades for owners of the game on current generation consoles. An already disgruntled fan base for the game now has more reasons to piss off 505 and developer Remedy as it seems clear that the deluxe version of the control and its Ultimate Edition are the same product but with different names.
