Disney has reportedly re-hired James Gunn to expel Guardians of the Galaxy 3 according to the Deadline although Gunn had shot provocateur over a series of unlawful offensive tweets last year Mike Cernovich.
Deadline reportedly "confirmed with Marvel and Gunn's camp." The decision to reinstate Gunn had been discussed months before the report was released after some discussions with the studio executives of Disney and the Marvel Studio team.
Chairman Alan Horn issued a statement at the time of the original incident stating, "The offensive attitudes and statements found in the James Twitter feed are untenable and contradict the values of our studio at the time , Although the tweets came almost a decade ago and had been criticized by other stores in the past, Gunn made a statement after their upheaval. The full statement can be read below:
I do not want to say I'm better, but I'm very, very different from a couple of years ago; Today I try to root my work in love, connection and less in anger. My days are saying something just because it's shocking and trying to get a reaction.
In the past, I have apologized for my humor, which offends people. I was really sorry and meant every word of my apology.
For the record, when I did these shocking jokes, I did not live them. I know that this is a strange statement and seems obvious, but I say it here anyway. Anyway, that's the absolutely honest truth: I've made a lot of offensive jokes. I no longer do not blame my former self for it, but I like myself more and feel today as a full person and creator. I love you all.
However, Gunn's departure from reporters, insiders from Hollywood, and even those working in Marvel was met with criticism. Many critics pointed to the involvement of Cernovich – one of the most prominent representatives of Pizzagate promotion – as a cause for concern. Gunn's shooting even resulted in the first two Guardians of the Galaxy movies being signed with a cast in which Marvel and Disney were asked to reconsider the shot.
"We fully support James Gunn," wrote the cast. "We were all shocked by his abrupt shooting last week and deliberately waited these ten days to respond, to reflect, to pray, to listen and to discuss. During this time, we were encouraged by the support of fans and members of the media who want to reinstate James as the director of Volume 3, and discouraged by those who are so easily deceived into believing the many outlandish conspiracy theories around him.
Disney co-chair Alan Horn reportedly met with Gunn and Marvel Studios co-president Kevin Feige to say he may return in August, but nothing came of it at the time the meeting.
Since then, Gunn has agreed to direct Suicide Squad 2 for Warner Bros, which is due to appear next year. He is one of the few directors to participate in Marvel and DC projects in two different studios.
Guardians of the Galaxy 3 is under development, but has been pushed back from the original release date for 2020. There is currently no new release date.
