Do you want Wi-Fi 6 now? The new TP-Link routers start at $ 70

OK, I was wrong. Without a possible Black Friday blockbuster, I would not have thought that we would sell a Wi-Fi 6 router for less than $ 1

00 by 2020. But here we are in early October with TP-Link's new Wi-Fi 6 router – including one for $ 70.

This is the new TP-Link Archer AX1500, which you can buy from Walmart next week. As the name implies "AX", the router supports 802.11ax, the technical name for Wi-Fi 6 – the newest, fastest version of Wi-Fi . The "1500" bit gives you the theoretical maximum speeds of the individual router bands: 300 Mbit / s at 2.4 GHz and 1200 Mbit / s at 5 GHz. It also has a 1.5 GHz Tri-Core CPU and 5 Gigabit ports on the back.

This 1,200-Mbps speed is equivalent to the highest Wi-Fi-6 transmission speeds we've ever seen our test lab but theoretical maxima are mostly from optimal test conditions that lack real variables. Use the device in a busy home with lots of walls, equipment, and signal interference from neighbors to deal with them, and you'll probably see much lower speeds.

And do not expect higher speeds than you pay from your ISP. These ISP transfer rates are the same as your local network speed limit and there's nothing a Wi-Fi 6 router or other router can do to speed it up.

802.11ax has a lot to offer for those who want to make their home Internet connection future-proof. In addition to the higher top speeds, Wi-Fi 6 routers are much better at making many connections at once, and manufacturers say they can much better mitigate interference from annoying networks nearby. Wonky's new features such as OFDMA and enhanced MU-MIMO should also help them to transmit the signal more efficiently to all your devices.

Of course you need Wi-Fi 6 devices to use these advanced features. These are just coming onto the market – especially the iPhone 11 and the Samsung Galaxy S10 . If you do not have such a Wi-Fi 6 phone or laptop, do not worry – Wi-Fi 6 is backward compatible so even older devices can connect (but without many of these Wi-Fi devices) -Fi 6- Advantages).

TP-Link's other new Wi-Fi 6 router, the Archer AX3000, outperforms the theoretical top speeds in the 5 GHz band at about 2,400 Mbps and slightly less than in the 2.4 GHz band 600 Mbps. and it also adds a USB port. Like the AX1500, he will arrive at Walmart next week. Asking price: 130 US dollars.

If you're shopping with Wi-Fi 6 right now – or if you have a fancy new phone with your own Wi-Fi 6 radio that you're in the mood to enjoy – then these may be very tempting. And, of course, $ 70 is far less painful to price than high-end Wi-fi 6 Workhorse routers that cost more than $ 300 . However, I think most of us can afford to wait and see what our options will look like next year.

Give us at least a few weeks to test things out and let you know how they are developing. We'll take care of it faster than you can say.
