You may want to do most of your festive purchases during Amazon Prime Day 2020 and Black Friday this year, according to the online retailer industry organization.
There are still three months to Christmas, but demand is expected to increase as more people shop online than ever before. Many companies have stated that they may struggle to deal with this, especially if consumers leave their purchases until the last minute.
Speaking to the BBC, Andy Mulcahy of IMRG, the industry association for online retailers, said: “We believe the volumes will be really very high this year. Even if this is not a problem in itself, it is too tight, too much to achieve from it. ”
While Mulcahy discourages everyone from panic buying, he advises distributing your purchases evenly. “If you can hand out your groceries and do quite a bit of it, maybe even a little, in November, that would really help.”
The BBC found that online sales in the first few months of 2020 were around 5% higher than last year, even before the UK lockdown. Covid-19 has only pushed those numbers up, and growth rates are expected to be around 40 to 50%, according to IMRG, with no signs of slowing.
“At this point, I think we can expect at least a 30% increase for the main festive season, but if stores have to close it could go up to 50%,” Mulcahy said.
The delivery companies also highlighted how busy the past six months have been. “It’s been like Christmas for us for the past six months,” said Mike Hancox, head of delivery company Yodel. “We believe it will, in a way, be the biggest online Christmas ever. At Yodel, it will certainly be our biggest year yet. We plan for success and I think every other delivery person will expect the same.”
With Amazon Prime Day 2020 expected to happen sometime in October and Black Friday on November 27, there are plenty of ways to get your Christmas shopping done early and save money in the process.
