Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot leads slow sales of January games

The gaming industry got off to a slow start in 2020, as there are hardly any new major versions on the shelves this winter. This drought is evident in the NPD Group's recent game sales report, which shows a 26% decrease in physical and digital purchases in January compared to last year.

According to the report, games raised a total of $ 678 million in hardware and software in January 2020. This is a significant decrease compared to January 2019, when players spent $ 893 million, according to the NPD.

Game and DLC sales decreased 31% from January 2019 when Kingdom Hearts 3 and Resident were released to strengthen Evil 2 . In the meantime, Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot was the only major release last January that topped the charts and made it the third highest launch month in franchise history.

The list contains many of the usual suspects when it comes to high-revenue games. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare took second place and remained the best-selling release in the past 1

2 months. EA Heavy-Hitter Madden 2020 and Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order came in at three and four, respectively.

Nevertheless, there were some surprises in the ranking, such as Grand Theft Auto V, whose dominance is the best-seller of all time and shows no signs of slowing down. The 2013 game returned to the top 5 for the first time since August 2019. Ring Fit Adventure jumped to 9th place, the highest ranking so far. Perhaps the classic New Year's fitness resolutions have helped increase sales for Nintendo's fitness game.

But not only the games have led to a decline in January numbers. NPD attributed much of the decline to the late stage of this generation's life cycle as Sony and Microsoft are preparing to launch new consoles later this year.

On the hardware side, console sales decreased 35% compared to last January Systems that grossed $ 129 million. Nintendo Switch was the best-selling platform of the month. Seven of the publisher's games appeared in the top 20 of the software table.

Accessories performed slightly better, declining only 11% to a total of $ 238 million. These sales were spearheaded by Microsoft's Xbox Elite Series 2, which came out late last year. The wireless controller was the best-selling gaming accessory for the third year in a row and already the fifth-fastest in US history.

The charts don't look much better in February, but the tide should change in March when Doom Eternal Animal Crossing: New Horizons and Half-Life: Alyx will all be published towards the end of the month.
