Tesla CEO Elon Musk promised a more powerful drive option for the upcoming Model S, the Model X, and the next generation Roadster sports car that will bring acceleration and speed beyond the current jack, the so-called Ludicrous mode ,
Musk tweeted on Wednesday night "The only thing behind Ludicrous is Plaid," a teaser for a higher powered vehicle and a nod to the movie Spaceballs.
These new, more powerful versions of the Model S, the Model X, and the Roadster contain what Musk calls the Karo Powertrain, and are about a year away from production. This new powertrain will have three engines, one more than the twin engine system of today's S and X models.
This diamond drive train has already seen some action. Tesla announced Wednesday that a plaid-powered, chassis-prototype model S had topped the Laguna Seca circuit in 1: 36: 555, one second faster than the record for a four-door sedan.
The "Plaid" drivetrain is not offered in the lower-priced Model 3 or Model Y, which is expected to go into production by the end of 2020. Musk also promised that this plaid powertrain will cost more than the "current offers". but will be less than the competition ", without explaining what that means.
Narrow supporters of the automaker could remember evidence of a three-engined powertrain in the past.
When Tesla unveiled a new roadster prototype in November 2017, Musk said it would have had three engines and would be capable of a whopping 0 to 60 mph in 1.9 seconds and a top speed of 250 mph or more to drive. The Roadster is not expected to go into production until 2020.
New is Tesla's plan to provide this more powerful three-motor powertrain for the Model S and the Model X. And it's an important option when it actually comes about. Model S has existed since 2012 and sales have dropped since the introduction of the more affordable Model 3.
And yet, Musk has said that the X and the S will not be much freshened up. If Tesla wants to maintain the demand for luxury vehicles with higher profit margins, new fairings like this plaid powertrain are crucial.
Tesla announced Ludicrous mode for its S models as early as July 2015. Next model X, Musk unveiled several options for the company's S sedan, including a lower-priced version, longer battery life, and the "Ludicrous mode" for even faster acceleration The speed increased from 0 to 60 mph in 2.8 seconds, due to improved battery backup. This new backup, Musk said in a blog post at that time, has its own electronics and a tiny lithium-ion battery that monitors the current and protects against excessive current.
Tesla also equipped the main contactor with a high-temperature space on superalloy instead of steel. This allowed the battery pack to remain "springy" under the heat of heavy current. In the end, the maximum packaging performance increased from 1300 to 1500 amps.
Ludicrous was a $ 10,000 markup for new buyers. In the first six months of the announcement, Tesla lowered the price for existing owners of the Model S P85 and sold them the $ 5,000 upgrade required for Ludicrous Mode.
Musk joked in this 2015 blog post that there's "a speed faster than ridiculous, but that's reserved for the next generation Roadster in 4 years: Maximum Plaid.
