Final Fantasy 16 announced for PS5 and PC

During Wednesday’s PlayStation 5 Showcase stream, Square Enix gave Final Fantasy fans a first look at the next major entry in the RPG franchise: Final Fantasy 16.

The gameplay featured Final Fantasy elements that we know and love, such as chocobos, Shiva, dragoons and discussions about “mother crystals”. It seemed more focused on controlling a single character than a group of them.

The beasts that Final Fantasy fans know as Summons, Primals or Eikons can also be seen in the entire trailer and cause a lot of chaos in the medieval environment. We see Shiva, Ifrit, Phoenix and what looks like Titan.

Final Fantasy 16 will be a PlayStation exclusive and a PC version will also come. While Square Enix didn’t announce a release date for next-generation Final Fantasy, years have passed since the last entry. Final Fantasy 15 was released in November 2016, so it makes sense that a test for the next installment of the popular JRPG franchise should finally get its head up.

The new game will be produced by Naoki Yoshida, the producer’s mastermind Final Fantasy 14and it is being developed by Hiroshi Takai who also worked on the Final Fantasy MMORPG. Earlier this year, Naoki Yoshida downplayed rumors he directed Final Fantasy 16, Speculations that he was the director of the game can be described as “false news”. However, he never said he wasn’t producing it.

Members of Final Fantasy 15 The team created a new studio called Luminous Productions within Square Enix. This team is working on the Athia project, which was announced in June.
