Get an individual night's sleep at the press of a button

Sleep is personal. No two people sleep the same, and although there are many tips, researches and tools to improve your night's sleep, comfort is what counts. The Beautyrest SmartMotion Base 3.0 ($ 1,199 at Amazon) is the company's newest high-performance motorized bed frame, designed to give everyone the options they need to sleep better.

The $ 1,500 base station has several customizable features, but it's not a really smart bed. That is not when you combine it with the Beautyrest Sleeptracker Monitor, a sensor that you can get when you buy your bed for free (or $ 200 per person) that records sleep and works with Amazon Alexa. Of the four smart beds we tested, Beautyrest did the most things right. If you are looking for a temperature control, the WinkBed CoolControl Base is the better choice. If you are looking for a way to improve your existing mattress, the Eight Sleep Mars is a good place to start. If you're ready to spend a lot of money on a new bed, and if you're curious about sleep statistics, I'd recommend SmartMotion Base 3.0 and Sleeptracker Monitor.

SmartMotion Base 3.0

I tested the Queen Beautyrest SmartMotion Base 3.0 in my own home for five weeks. Except for a weekend outing to visit my parents, my husband and I slept on it every night. The setup was easy, but this bed is really heavy and comes in one piece. It hardly fits in the narrow staircase of my house from the 1940s. The single piece, however, makes it easy to assemble. Attach the legs to the desired height (there are 3 ", 5" or 8 "leg options), connect the power cord and install the included headboard mounts when using a headboard. A printed installation guide and a user manual are included.

Beautyrest makes two more SmartMotion bases, the 1.0 and the 2.0. There is a comparison table on the Beautyrest website. In summary, the 3.0 model adds a third preset memory position, four USB charging outputs and a "Next to Nightstand" function that keeps the mattress close to the wall while the head is raised. The robustness gets better all along the line. The SmartMotion 1.0 has a weight limit of 650 pounds, while models 2.0 and 3.0 can support up to 850 pounds. I tested the base and Sleeptracker monitor with the Beautyrest Sonya Luxury Firm mattress, but the SmartMotion Base 3.0 is compatible with any standard adjustable spring core or memory foam mattress.

Comfort and Customization

Since you can use the SmartMotion Base 3.0 with any mattress, you choose strength and material. If your preferred mattress is installed, the SmartMotion Base 3.0 provides adjustments for exercise and massage. The mechanism in the base supports the raising and lowering of the head and foot of the bed independently of each other. The king size model includes individual movements for each side of the bed. A "Zero G" setting that raises your feet above your heart to relieve the lower back and promote blood circulation. I found Zero G to be comfortable and even a bit flowing, as the name implies, but I did not find it very often. My husband and I agreed that Zero G was a pleasant environment, but none that would take us longer than watching a movie or reading before bed. This is mainly because we are both side sleepers and the shape of the mattress in the zero G position is not so comfortable overnight.

The SmartMotion Base 3.0 has a remote control that controls these functions, and you can override the three functions with pre-configured preset buttons to save your favorites. There is also a handy magnet on the side of the bed to hold the remote, which I appreciate since my bedside table is already full.

One of the features missing from this smart bed setup is the temperature control option you get for the Sleep Number 360 Smart Bed and the WinkBed CoolControl Base. What is missing in the air conditioning, the SmartMotion Base 3.0 tries to balance with their massage function. There are six massage levels for the head and foot of the bed. I enjoyed the first two levels but after that the noise was too loud and my bedroom on the second floor felt like it could shake apart. However, if massage chairs are your thing and you want this feature in a bed, Beautyrest will impress you with its power.
