God of War wins the Game of the Year, 9 out of 23 awards at the DICE Awards

God of War won the major awards in the DICE Awards of the Game Industry and won nine out of 23 awards.

The big win for Sony and its YOU Santa Monica Studio is confirmation for the Japanese The greenlighting strategy for PlayStation 4 is exclusive to huge single player campaigns – something few publishers in the game industry want to do.

The DICE Awards are presented by peer industry peers and hosted annually by the Las Vegas Academy of Interactive Arts & Sciences (AIAS), the nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting and recognizing the interactive arts that make up its membership base of over 30,000 members.

This year's Game of the Year went to God of War, which also won the highest award at the Game Awards in December. God of War takes players on a journey as the Spartan warrior Kratos, a man living outside the shadow of the gods, ventures into the brutal Scandinavian wilderness with his son Atreus and fights for a deeply personal quest.

"There are two ways we can go in this industry," said Cory Barlog, Game Director of God of War. "The path of cynicism or the path of greatness." He said he was proud of everyone in the team.

"God of War" was not my favorite song of the year when I chose Rockstars Red Dead Redemption 2. But I'm not going to scare off that win because I thought it would be a brilliant restart of a popular series. The story of Kratos, the god of war, and his son Atreus is so touching. It turned the game from a hack-n-slash title into a narrative about a father and a son, and that made the difference.

Celeste, also awarded several times, received two awards. Other top winners were Florence for the portable game of the year, Super Smash Bros. Ultimate for the fighting game of the year, Beat Saber for the haunting game of the year, Mario Tennis aces for the sports game of the year, Monster Hunter: World for Role Playing the Game of the Year and Fortnite for excellence in, among other things, online gameplay.

"Tonight at the 22nd Annual DICE Awards, the interactive entertainment industry from around the world gathered to celebrate their trailblazers – the best video games and the teams that have created cross-border experiences with their amazing talent and vision have fascinated global audiences, "said Meggan Scavio, president of the Academy of Interactive Arts and Sciences, in a statement. "On behalf of the Academy, I not only congratulate the incredible nominees of this year, but also the highly valued winners chosen by their peers."

About 700 people attended the DICE Summit this year, including the awards ceremony. They all heard Cory Barlog say the word F when they accepted the prize for the best game design.

In addition to prizes for the industry's best games and developers from the previous year, the DICE Awards also honored Bonnie Ross, vice president of Microsoft, and director of 343 Industries, which oversees the Halo franchise, with the special honor of In 2019 to receive the Academy's Hall of Fame Award.
