Kan Liu, Director Product Management of Google's Chrome OS, has announced that the Chromebook team from Google Steam is bringing to Chromebooks.
The news reported by AndroidPolice is certainly exciting. This means that PC gamers don't have to rely on Windows to play games. According to the website, Liu implied that Google would work with Valve, the company behind Steam, to make this possible.
Valve previously made Steam available along with a wide range of PC games on Linux, the Linux open source operating system that ChromeOS is based on, and apparently, Valve is working on the transition from Steam to Linux Steam make it a reality on ChromeOS.
Gaming Chromebooks Arrive?
While this step opens up the opportunity for PC gaming Most of these devices (where our best Chromebook site can be found) are affordable devices with basic specifications.
That means they can only play the most basic PC games, not blockbuster AAA titles like Cyberpunk 2077.
But even that is a start that offers Chromebook owners hundreds of titles, from 2D indie -Games to retro classics that may be able to run on their computers.
As we did with new Chromebooks like the Samsung Galaxy Chromebook that was recently unveiled at CES 2020, there will be a new generation of Chromebooks with more powerful specifications that may run more demanding games.
With Steam on Chromebooks, you can also play games from a more powerful streaming gaming PC to a Chromebook with the Steam-In-Home Streaming feature that turns a Chromebook into an affordable portable gaming device regardless of its specifications ( it only requires a reliable network connection).
If this causes Steam to end up on Chromebooks, this is great news for PC gamers and Chromebook owners as it means more choice for them.
However, it is not such good news for Microsoft that PC games used to be almost totally dominant in terms of operating systems.
