Google releases major Google Maps update for iPhone and CarPlay

Google also wants to be part of the iOS 14 release noise. That’s why the company released a new update for Google Maps today, specifically aimed at iPhone and CarPlay users.

Today’s update brings Google Maps to version 5.53. This time, the changelog has some useful information that we can use to find out what’s new in this new build.

On the flip side, some of the improvements that Google mentions here have been around for a while, so I’m assuming they have all reached general availability and anyone with an iPhone can take advantage of them today.

First and foremost, the new Google Maps version comes with the Google Assistant. “now available in many countries outside the US.“The changelog does not contain any information on the countries the assistant now lives in, but there is a good chance that all major regions are covered.

Google then officially announces Google Maps for Apple Watch, a feature that launched last month with the previous update. Here, too, there is the possibility that everyone can now install Google Maps on their Apple Watch and call up directions directly on their wrist.

Last but not least, Google has improved the estimated arrival times to provide users with more accurate information on their iPhones.

The new version of Google Maps is of course also good news for CarPlay users, especially thanks to the expanded support for the Google Assistant.

On the other hand, CarPlay users have another reason to cheer as Apple just released iOS 14 for their iPhones. This new version contains an extensive CarPlay update with background support, new app categories and the option of using an iPhone as a car key on selected models. Currently only BMW uses this function.
