Google plans to introduce a resource limit for all Chrome ads after finding that a tiny contingent of resource-intensive ads is responsible for more than a quarter of all advertising-related network data and CPU usage. Testing has already started, Vale continued, and a full rollout has been completed is slotted for August. While some of these “outrageous” ads are deliberately resource intensive, like ads used to mine the cryptocurrency, others are just crappy programmed or not optimized for network usage.
With this function Ads must not exceed the following three thresholds before a user interacts with them::4 MB of network data, 15 seconds of CPU usage in a period of 30 seconds or 60 seconds of total CPU usage. Google checked to determine these upper limits data usage among some of Chrome’s worst offenders.
“We chose the most outrageous ads that use more CPU or network bandwidth than 99.9% of all recognized ads for this resource. . . While today only 0.3% of the ads exceed this threshold, they account for 27% of the network data used by ads and 28% of the total CPU usage of the ads, ”said Vale.
