Google is tracking advertisers with shady practices updating their ad policies that will take effect on September 1.
The two policy updates will help combat political and electoral information ahead of the November 3 US presidential election, Google told Digital Trends.
“In recent years, we’ve put in place political ad safeguards to prevent foreign interference, restrict targeting, and increase the transparency of election ads viewed by users. To reinforce these efforts, we are expanding our guidelines today to prevent the coordinated dissemination of disinformation by domestic actors who hide their identities and receive material obtained through advertisements illegally, ”said a Google spokesman.
“We believe that these new measures strike the right balance to maintain confidence in our elections while maintaining a solid dialogue and public discourse on current events,”
The first policy update prohibits advertisers who hide their affiliation from spreading political disinformation and complements Google’s policies that prohibit misrepresentation of advertisers and misleading information in ads. With the update, Google can take action against an advertiser’s entire network of linked accounts.
The second policy update prohibits advertisers from using illegally obtained information obtained through hacking or unauthorized access to confidential digital material to trick people into clicking advertisements. Google made it clear that the ban does not apply to whistleblowers.
The move against double advertisers follows Google’s ban on showing ads alongside coronavirus conspiracy theories from August 18.
Google previously banned ads that made malicious claims about the prevention and treatment of COVID-19. The new guideline, however, applies more generally to exposed conspiracy theories such as Bill Gates’ involvement and the link to 5G technology.
