The Apple Watch SE came as a surprise. Firstly, it was only rumored that it would come pretty late in the run-up to Apple’s September launch event, suggesting it was far less important than the Apple Watch 6 headline.
Second … it actually seems like a really smart buy, even though it doesn’t have any really standout features.
Like the new iPad Air 2020 compared to the more expensive iPad Pro, the Watch SE has almost all of the key features you̵
It has some key features – the constant display of the newer Apple Watch models is the biggest flaw – but it doesn’t have the advanced electrocardiogram and blood oxygen measurement capabilities of the Apple Watch 6, but it still has enough features to make it a more attractive purchase than the more expensive Apple Watch 6.
Apple Watch SE price and release date
The price of the Apple Watch SE depends on whether you opt for the pure GPS version or the cellular version and whether you prefer the simple solo loop / sport band or the more elegant braided solo loop.
We received samples of the Solo Loop, but unfortunately they were a little too big for our wrists. However, it was much more comfortable just to put it on instead of playing around with a buckle instead.
The Apple Watch SE is available now in the Apple Store or online and went on sale on September 18 in key areas worldwide:

A major “upgrade”
The first question you might ask is, what is actually replacing the Apple Watch SE? The Watch 5 isn’t always on, but it has more power than the Watch 4. So if these two devices are still on sale, we might call them the Apple Watch 4.5.
With that in mind, what upgrades is the SE bringing, if you can call it that, to the Watch 4 (which, as mentioned, is no longer for sale)?
The most important change concerns the chipset inside. We found that the Apple Watch 5’s battery life improved significantly when the constantly on display was turned off. Since this is not a problem with the Watch SE, we expect good battery life from this device – and we see that in the first few days when we strap it to our wrist.
There are still tons of useful features on the Apple Watch SE that those upgrading from the Apple Watch 3 would love, and many of them are also great for health monitoring – which is quickly becoming the number one reason to buy this watch .
The decibel meter on board the Watch SE warns you well if the sound around you is too high. The sleep tracking, admittedly available on any watch the new WatchOS 7 can run on, is useful, even if it’s not as comprehensive as dedicated sleep monitors, leaving things like the time for a deep, restful sleep not specified are.
The constantly running altimeter is useful for keeping you informed of the true reflection of your altitude during a run – to the nearest foot, according to Apple, although testing with the Apple Watch 6 while exercising side by side found that the altitude did not and descent varied 10 to 15 meters over a distance of two miles.
Not massive, but we wouldn’t use the Watch SE to calculate our exact altitude stats for a workout.
At the other end of the fitness scale, the Apple Watch SE is a great option for older relatives whose health you may want to keep an eye on – you can get fall detection alerts or heart rate issues alerts. will really bring peace of mind to those affected.
Combine that with the larger 40mm / 44mm size display thanks to the smaller bezel and this will be a really helpful device for the elderly.
With the new Family Setup feature for the Watch range, which lets you set up an Apple that someone else can wear from your iPhone, buying the Watch SE becomes a relative one for someone who doesn’t use an iPhone simple matter.
Apple Watch 6 design and display
Apple has intentionally not changed the design of the Apple Watch SE. It has the same dimensions as the Apple Watch 4, 5, and 6, saving you money by eliminating the need to create a new shell.
That means you have the same 40mm / 44mm sizes to choose from (with a corresponding price increase for the larger model), with the heart rate monitor on the back and the digital rotating crown on the side with the power button at the bottom for you to use the Watch can interact.
All of the elements of this model promise a premium device the minute you take it out of the box, a hallmark of a device that brought Apple to the forefront of the wearables market, and the SE shows no signs of corners being cut in the design.
There is something incredibly strange about the Apple Watch SE display: although it’s supposed to be identical to the Watch 6, we’ve found time and again that it’s a bit brighter in everyday use.
This is strange partly because it is supposed to be identical, but also because the displays were equally bright when we fired the Watch SE to full brightness with the Torch app.
It was just that, in everyday use, when looking at the dial to see the time or check information, the Watch SE was significantly brighter than the Watch 6, even though the brightness settings were set to an identical level.
Whether there isn’t a permanently visible display that might add an extra layer on top that could block a certain level or brightness, or just a quirk of design, the Watch SE has a slightly more vibrant screen.
The key new features of WatchOS 7 are brought to bear in the new range of Apple Watches. The Watch SE is able to track sleep, monitor hand washing, track a greater number of fitness workouts than before, and take advantage of new services like the in-depth Fitness Plus suite of workout videos.
In practice, we didn’t see a major upgrade with the new software – hand washing monitoring was good when it worked, but most of the time the Watch SE didn’t notice that we were lathering our hands. or discovered only halfway.
Sleep tracking is fine – it is there to let you know how long you’ve been in bed and asleep, but it doesn’t give any information about sleep quality like other trackers.
And while it’s good to know if you have enough battery to last through the night or if you are weak when you wake up, there is no easy way to quickly charge the battery.
After 24 hours, the Apple Watch SE seems to be an impressive device – all of the most important features are there. This is a great way to save money if you can’t worry about and can do without advanced health data, always on display.
It’s worth remembering that the starting price of $ 279 / £ 269 is only for the smaller model with no cellular capabilities and the price goes up quickly if you want to purchase the larger model or add the option to lose the phone – but compared to the Bei Earlier models, the Watch SE had all of the features that many would want for something less than they would expect.
We will test the Watch SE properly in the coming days to see how the battery life is performing and if This Model is the model that every potential watch owner should check out first.
