HBO Max is making a new spin-off TV series from the upcoming film The Batman, set in the same universe as the 2021 film and with the participation of director Matt Reeves. The untitled show will focus on the Gotham City police department and will follow the film’s example to investigate city corruption.
The author Terence Winter is behind the show and has previously created Boardwalk Empire, a solid HBO drama that doesn’t quite count among classics like The Sopranos and The Wire. He was also a co-creator of the HBO series Vinyl, which was completed in one season, and wrote the screenplay for The Wolf of Wall Street.

As already mentioned, the show will take place in the universe of the upcoming film and further explore the characters of Gotham. We believe that Jeffrey Wright, who will play in Police Commissioner Gordon in the new film, is the most likely candidate to replay his role in this series.
HBO Max is currently only available in the United States. At the time of series completion, however, we expect the service to be rolled out to multiple locations or to be licensed to a local broadcaster.
The Batman will be released in October 2021. So expect to see the show sometime afterwards.
A Batman universe is in the works
The most tempting element of the announcement is that this show “will ultimately launch a new Batman universe across multiple platforms.” This suggests that there may be more films, series, or even games in the works that will tie in to The Batman, although Warner Bros doesn’t elaborate on what the specifics of this universe will look like.
So this film sounds like it stands out clearly from what is going on in the DC Extended Universe and incorporates this specific vision of Batman’s world into a common setting for different stories.
