Nothing is as annoying as having a song in your head and not being able to identify it. Fortunately, Google search can help you figure out what tune is in your head if you can zoom the song.

The “Hum to Search”

; feature is available on the Google mobile app and works with hum, whistle, or anything else you can do to mimic a tune. Results aren’t always accurate, but it’s a good place to start if a catchy tune is driving you crazy.

First, open the Google app on your iPhone, iPad or Android device and tap the “Microphone” icon in the search bar. On Android devices, you can also tap the microphone icon in the Google Search widget on your home screen.

In Google, tap the microphone icon

When the listening screen appears, you will see a “Search A Song” button. Tip it on.

Tap the button to find a song

Start humming or whistling the song you want to identify. This tool can also identify real music that is currently playing.

When Google finds similar matches, the results are flagged with match percentages. If your song is not in the top results, tap More Results.

If Google cannot identify the song, it will display a screen saying “Cannot match”. You can tap Try Again to try again.

Tap Try again

In our tests, the function is a hit or miss. Hum to Search does a good job with popular songs and different melodies. Songs that aren’t easy to hum are harder to identify.
