How to install a ring video doorbell

Even if you don’t have manual skills, installing a new video doorbell is easy. The Ring Video doorbell has an optimized installation process that anyone with DIY skills can do in less than 30 minutes. In addition, most of the tools you need are already included in the installation kit. How to install a ring video doorbell.

Note that our steps are mostly for the 2nd generation ring video doorbell, but can work for just about any ring doorbell (more on this at the end of our manual).

There are three things you need to get out of the way before installing your new doorbell.

First you need to charge the battery of the Ring Video doorbell. Pull off the silver part of the housing (the front panel) and slide the battery out of the bottom of the doorbell. Then plug the supplied charging cable into the battery and plug it into a socket until only the green light on the battery housing is lit. When you̵

Second, switch off the power supply of your existing doorbell by pressing the corresponding switch in the breaker box of your house. If you don’t know which switch is the right one, press the main switch. This prevents an unwanted electric shock while you are installing your new doorbell.

Third, install the app and go through the on-screen instructions to connect Doorbell video doorbell with the Wi-Fi of your home.

Remove the old doorbell

Next you want to remove your old doorbell. Remove the screws with the screwdriver included in the installation kit and pull the doorbell away from the wall. You should find two wires on the back of the doorbell wrapped around two screws. Loosen the screws and remove the wires from the doorbell.

Attach the ring video doorbell

To install the ring, you’ll need to take a pencil, screwdriver from the installation kit, and a drill if the installation holes don’t match the holes on your old doorbell (most likely not). Otherwise you only need the screwdriver.

If the holes are not aligned, hold the ring of the ring against the wall where you want to install it and mark on the wall with the pencil where the new screw holes should be. Then use your drill to drill the new holes. Insert the plastic hole anchors supplied with the doorbell into the drilled holes.

Then loosen the screws on the back of the ring. Wrap the bell wires around the screws on the back of the ring doorbell and tighten the screws.

If the cables are too short, remove the cable extensions from the installation kit. Slide the bottom of a wire extension and a wire that comes out of your wall into a wire nut from the kit (they look like gray caps) and twist the wire nut clockwise to connect the two wires. Then just slide the wire extensions under the screws and tighten them.

If your old doorbell was digital, you will need to install the diode that came with the installation kit. The diode looks like a wire with a black pearl in the middle. To install the diode, take the screws out of the doorbell, slide the screws through the holes in the wire, and screw the screws back into their holes before wrapping the wires around them.

Tip: If your bell does not work after installation, remove the diode, turn it over and reinstall it. Watch the video below for more information on installing the diode.

Attach the doorbell to the wall using the screws provided. Your ring must be one meter above the ground to function properly. If you are installing it higher, place the installation wedge supplied with the doorbell behind the upper part of the device before screwing it to the wall. This will only tilt the doorbell a little down so that you have the perfect view of your walkway.

Do you remember the front panel that you removed to charge the battery? Now you can snap it back into place. Use the star-shaped end of the screwdriver to insert the tiny screw from the kit into the hole at the bottom of the doorbell. This prevents the front panel from coming loose.

Finally switch on the power supply again. The ring on the front of your doorbell should light up and you should be able to use the app to see what your new doorbell sees.

What about other ring doorbells?

Smart home devices ring the doorbell

What if you have a different bell door model? The good news is that if your doorbell can be installed with a wired connection, the steps are all basically the same and the design should be similar too. Let us briefly break down the main differences between the models.

Ring video doorbell 2nd gen.: The flagship model may be hard-wired, but has a battery that you can use instead. You don’t have to plug it in at all if you don’t want to, but that means it doesn’t ring physically either.

Bell video doorbell 3: This model can be wired, but also has a quick-change battery. In practice, it works just like the 2nd generation doorbell model.

Ring video doorbell Elite: The Elite is an interesting exception because it can only be connected to Power Over Ethernet connections, a type of Internet connection that also supplies power. If you accidentally get stuck with an Elite model and have no PoE options, you can purchase an adapter.

Ring video doorbell pro: This model can just be wired into your existing door. There is no battery option.

Ring peephole cam: This model has only one battery; There is no way to connect it.

Ring video doorbell 3 Plus: The design here is largely the same as the doorbell 3, so it can be wired or a battery can be used.
