Are these the 1927 Yankees? No, it is the NC dinosaurs that have the best record in the KBO and lead the league in the home runs.

Major League Baseball has a plan to start its season in late July, but you don’t have to wait until MLB’s late opening day to watch live baseball on TV. Baseball and bats have been flying in South Korea for weeks. The country’s professional baseball league, the Korean Baseball Organization (KBO) with 10 teams, hosts real live baseball games. Since there are no MLB games on the program, ESPN broadcasts six KBO games every week from Tuesday to Sunday.

The time difference between South Korea and the United States (13 to 16 hours in advance) makes it a challenge to watch KBO games live. You need to get up early (or stay up late on the west coast) to see first place – games start at 5:30 a.m. ET (2:30 a.m.PT) during the week and the weekend at 4:00 a.m. ET – but maybe you will get used to seeing the last innings with your morning coffee.

Here’s a quick introduction to get you started with the KBO so you can pick a favorite team and watch live baseball on ESPN.

When do KBO games run on TV?

ESPN broadcasts six games a week live on KBO’s 144 game program. The games will initially be played in empty stadiums. If a player or coach tests positive for COVID-19, the league is closed for at least three weeks.

The games will be shown on Tuesday through Friday at 5:30 a.m. (CET) and at the weekend at 1:00 a.m. or 4:00 a.m. (CET) on ESPN. In addition to the regular seasonal games, ESPN has the right to broadcast post-season KBO games, including the Korean Series. Ready to see? Check out ESPN’s schedule for this week.

You will hear familiar ESPN voices announcing the games. Karl Ravech and Eduardo Pérez play together with Jon Sciambi, Jessica Mendoza and Kyle Peterson. ESPN spokesmen call the games from home.

Wait, what is the KBO?

The KBO is the best professional baseball league in South Korea. It started playing with six teams in 1982 and has since expanded to 10 teams. Teams are not named after their location, but after the business unit to which they belong.

Here are the 10 KBO teams, the city where everyone plays their home games, and the year the team was founded:

  • Doosan Bears (Seoul, 1982)
  • Hanwha Eagles (Daejeon, 1986)
  • Kia tigers (gwangju, 1982)
  • Kiwoom heroes (seoul, 2008)
  • KT Wiz (Suwon, 2015)
  • LG Twins (Seoul, 1982)
  • Lotte Giants (Busan, 1982)
  • NC Dinos (Changwon, 2013)
  • Samsung Lions (Daegu, 1982)
  • SK Wyverns (Incheon, 2000)

The Doosan Bears and SK Wyverns were the top teams of last season and ended with identical 88-55-1 records. The Bears swept the Kiwoom Heroes in four games and won the 2019 title.

The Kia Tigers are the New York Yankees of the KBO. They have won 11 championships in the Korean Series and have never finished second. Second in the league are the Samsung Lions at eight, followed by the Bears (six) and SK Wyverns (four).

Two of the originally six teams in the league – the LG Twins and Lotte Giants – have only won two championships since 1994 and none. The Hanwha Eagles look like the lovable KBO losers who have won only one title since the game started in 1986. The league’s three newest teams – the Kiwoom Heroes, NC Dinos and KT Wiz – have never won a title.

Here’s what you need to know about each KBO team to pick a favorite for your root interests this year. Let the Dodgers mookie beds introduce you to some of the stars of the KBO:

Current KBO ranking

The NC Dinos lead the league in home races and were mostly in first place in the first season. The Doosan Bears, Kiwoom Heroes and LG Twins are not too far from the pace of the dinosaurs. Here you can keep an eye on the current KBO ranking.

How does the KBO differ from the MLB?

There is no DH debate in the KBO; All teams have a designated batsman. Games can also end in a draw. After 12 innings, a game is declared a tie and is not counted in the regular season. Playoff games can end in a draw after 15 innings and the game is then repeated. Five of the 10 teams qualify for the playoffs that culminate in the Korean Series Best of Seven championship. After all, bat flipping is an art in the KBO.
