- Huawei told Android Authority It is planned to selectively integrate selected Android 11 functions into EMUI.
- The company only had access to the Android 11 code base earlier this week when Google officially released the operating system.
- The company also announced that EMUI outperformed Android in many ways.
If you’ve followed the evolution of EMUI 11, you know that Huawei built the latest version of its mobile operating system on top of Android 10 rather than Android 11 – which Google released on September 8 for its Pixel devices.
As the owner of a Huawei device, you may then wonder when Huawei will migrate EMUI to an Android 11 base. However, it turns out the better question is when will EMUI take over some of the features of Android 11?
“What is certain is that after the official release of Android 11, we will selectively integrate some of its functions into EMUI 11,” said a Huawei spokesman Android Authority.
Huawei didn’t go on to say what specific Android 11 features to include in EMUI, but the statement confirms what we thought was right. Due to ongoing US trade sanctions against Huawei, the company didn’t have access to the Android 11 code base until the beginning of this week when it officially became available and open source. In other words, work on these features has just started.
At least from the outside, however, it doesn’t look like Huawei is a rush. Citing features such as the proprietary GPU Turbo technology, the company announced Android Authority“Over the past few years, EMUI has outperformed Android in many ways …”
Among other things, this is about a company that tries to make itself strong in a challenging situation. However, Huawei’s answer also speaks to the extent to which OEMs are customizing their software over standard Android. Whether it’s Samsung with One UI or OnePlus with Oxygen OS, many OEMs put a lot of emphasis on developing their own features that allow them to differentiate their phones rather than keeping up with Google’s software versions. It is probably unfair to expect Huawei to deviate from this priority, even in the situation it is currently in.
