IMD to research artificial intelligence to improve forecasting, forecasting extreme weather events – Technology News, Firstpost



The India Meteorological Department (IMD) plans to use artificial intelligence in weather forecasting, especially for the issue of nowcasts, which can help improve forecasting of extreme weather events by 3 to 6 hours, said director general Mrutunjay Mohapatra on Sunday.

He said the use of artificial intelligence and machine learning is not as widespread as in other areas and in the area of ​​weather forecasting is relatively new.

The IMD has invited research groups to investigate how artificial intelligence (AI) can be used to improve weather forecasting, and the Ministry of Earth Sciences is evaluating their proposals, Mohapatra said.

He said the IMD is also planning to conduct joint studies with other institutions in this regard.

The IMD uses various tools, such as radar and satellite imagery, to create nowcasts that provide information about extreme weather events over the next 3 to 6 hours.

The IMD publishes forecasts for extreme weather events such as thunderstorms and dust storms. In contrast to cyclones, forecasting thunderstorms that also cause lightning, thunderstorms and heavy rains are more difficult because the extreme weather events develop and dissolve in a very short time.

Last month, over 160 people died from lightning in Uttar Pradesh and Bihar alone.

The IMD wants to improve nowcast predictions through AI and machine learning.

“Artificial intelligence helps understand previous weather models and this can speed up decision making,” said Mohapatra.

The U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) announced new strategies this year to expand the agency’s application to four emerging science and technology focus areas – unmanned NOAA systems, artificial intelligence, omics, and the cloud – and so on transformative advances to control the quality and timeliness of NOAA’s science, products and services.

Omics is a series of advanced methods for the analysis of materials such as DNA, RNA or proteins.

Regarding AI, the overarching goal of the NOAA Artificial Intelligence (AI) strategy is to use AI to drive NOAA’s mission-driven mission priorities.

In doing so, the NOAA said it is trying to reduce the cost of data processing and to provide higher quality and more up-to-date scientific products and services for social benefit.
