Immortal Fenyx Rising Hands-On Preview



It’s been a while since we saw a new open world action adventure from Ubisoft. Immortal Fenyx Rising (formerly known as Gods & Monsters) is made by the team behind Assassin’s Creed Odyssey, and the influence of that is immediately apparent, but an even bigger one is The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild but Obvious Path.

I had to spend about four hours playing the game and shortly after jumping into the demo I came across one of the game̵

7;s 60 vaults. These seemed to be heavily inspired by the Breath of the Wild shrines. Of the three or four I’ve played, many puzzles of Heracles’s strength (think stasis) were enough to lift blocks or push balls through obstacle courses. Each of them felt unique enough, offered a decent challenge, and was a nice stop-gap between fights. As you complete each shrine, you will be rewarded with Zeus’ lightning bolt which will increase your stamina. This is important when exploring the world.

If you’ve played a game of Assassin’s Creed, you know what to expect. There are things to do all over the huge map to explore on a horse that can be called up at any time. All over the world there are missions, big boss fights, challenges and things that stand out left, right and in the middle. Given the great art style and history that pulled me into it, I wanted to explore far and wide.

The map consists of seven regions, each based on a Greek god. I was only allowed to explore one in my playthrough, but when I left a trailer that was shown to me before the demo, it all seemed very different in the flora and fauna that each region possesses. The exploration works very similarly to Breath of the Wild. Fenyx has a glider that is essentially used to get around quickly. While it can climb anywhere it’s visible, it has a stamina display that is pretty brutal.

As far as I can tell, the main objective of the game (which is supposed to last between 20 and 30 hours) is to reach Typhon, which is located in the gates of Tartaros, which is in the center of the map. As far as I can tell, you must complete missions in each of the seven regions before you can finish the game.

When it comes to combat, Assassin’s Creed fans will feel right at home. Fight against an incredible number of mythical creatures, including the Cyclops, Minotaur and Medusa, using divine powers like Apollo’s arrows, which you can use to wield an arrow in slow motion, Hephaestus’ hammer, which was lethal against larger enemies, or Are’s Wrath, which shoots down several spikes from the ground to take out multiple enemies. The game promotes combos more than the Assassin’s Creed games, with Fenyx being much more agile and being able to blow their enemies up.

While it wasn’t unlocked in my demo, you can upgrade your weapons like swords, axes, and your bow over time, and then keep upgrading them with resources. Same goes for your armor, which you can replace over time as you explore and upgrade it. You can also make potions for health, stamina, and defense.

Immortals Fenyx Rising is one of the best looking games I have ever played. The graphics are vibrant, enemies are incredibly detailed, and the whole world is full of creativity. Especially in combat, the number of effects flying around the screen is impressive, although it can be difficult to keep track of. The soundtrack is similar to that of Assassin’s Creed: Odyssey with Fenyx’s little attacks that give me some serious link vibes.

While Immortals Fenyx Rising feels like several other games, there’s enough here to get me excited to play more of the game at launch time. Also interesting is the fact that it looks absolutely stunning on PS5 / Xbox Series X but is playable on Nintendo Switch too. Less than a month after Assassin’s Creed: Valhalla, it will be interesting to see how that plays out.


Immortals Fenyx Rising will be released on December 3rd for Nintendo Switch, PS4, PS5, Xbox Series X / S, Xbox One and PC.
