Activbody describes the Activ5 as “a tiny gym in your pocket”. It’s a fist-sized strength training device in the shape of a puck. The Activ5 pairs with your phone and responds to around a hundred workouts that you can choose from in categories such as Office & Travel, Full Body, Upper Body, Lower Body and Core. You can do an entire workout – it takes anywhere from 4 to 7 minutes, depending on your choice – or just jump into specific exercises, each of which is generally around 30 seconds long.
Performing the exercises is fun and easy. The app tells you exactly what to do and shows you some photos to clear up any confusion. A typical exercise might be holding the puck between your hands while stretching your arms right in front of you, taking turns clenching your hands and resting, based on a visual style that follows the bouncing ball. Not only are you exercising your muscles, you are trying hard to keep the virtual ball on a given course with just the right amount of force.
Does this really provide meaningful training? I’m not a doctor or a physical trainer, but the Activ5 really does cause an invigorating burn when I do a 5 minute workout, and it gives me the impression that I am doing meaningful strength training without the need for weights. I’ll add a couple of sessions a day to my high tech home workout, which is already 20 minutes with the programand 20 minutes on the elliptical trainer.
