The hunt for smartphone performance improvements has forced Apple to add lens obstructions and notches on the fronts to the backs of iPhones. The next step, according to a recent report by Japanese blog Macotakara, will be a square camera block at the back – a design intended for a new triple-camera array and a new flash.
While conceptual renderings float the potential of a square block months, the orientation was largely speculative. In January, a Wall Street Journal report suggested that Apple was working to give the XS Max high-end iPhone three back cameras. However, the design may have an elongated and possibly repositioned pill shape similar to Samsung's later-known Galaxy S1
Instead, Chinese vendors claim that the rear camera design mimics the look of the Huawei Mate 20 Pro. If the cameras are positioned in this manner, Apple could more closely overlap images captured by multiple lenses or capture stereoscopic images more accurately than having a variety of sensors extending across the back of the device.
Macotakara also points out that this is the Triple The camera function could depend on sequences on both the iPhone XS and the iPhone XS Max, not just the larger phone. The Journal report previously suggested that only the Max sequel would feature, potentially leaving both the iPhone XS and XR series with twin cameras motivating for competitors. Apple's decision to "greet the score" required for the iPhone X's depth camera prompted its rivals to accept similar designs – until they came up with better alternatives. Although others first took the form, Apple's use of a square camera block to add an ultra-wide-angle lens in 2019 and a new time-of-flight 3D sensor camera array in 2020 could make the design the new norm elsewhere.  Camera bumpers have been widely accepted by consumers in recent years, although these projections can cause mere devices to become unstable when lying on flat surfaces. The design trade-off is considered necessary to accommodate evolving rear camera sensor and lens technologies that would otherwise be dispensed with by thinnest smartphones.
