IPVanish vs. NordVPN: Side-by-side comparison of two of the most popular VPNs

Before you shell out your hard-earned cash and commit to a two-year subscription with a virtual private network, read our head-to-head comparison of two of the most popular VPNs out there. Compared to its competitors, IPVanish has one of the best interfaces out there, encouraging you to go under the hood and learn the mechanics of the technology. NordVPN is now known for unbeatable prices and reliable speed.

Here is the breakdown of each individual’s strengths and weaknesses.

IPVanish

Better interface

IPVanish

A big win for IPVanish is the fun, configurable user interface, which makes it an ideal client for beginners who want to learn what a VPN does under the hood. My only complaint is that IPVanish’s desktop clients have been known to get stuck in a charging loop. This occurs in both the Windows and Mac versions of the app, and a fresh install is recommended on the IPVanish website. Otherwise, this has become one of my favorite user experiences with a VPN client.

IPVanish’s cross-platform flexibility and 40,000+ IP addresses are also great for people who are focused on finding a Netflix-friendly VPN. It is compatible with iOS, Android, macOS, Windows, Linux, routers, Amazon Fire devices, and all Android-based media devices.

When compared to high profile VPN speed gamers like ExpressVPN, it is tempting to call IPVanish’s speed sluggish. But IPVanish regularly gives NordVPN a run for its money in the tests run three times a day by ProPrivacy, outperforming NordVPN in that race at the time of this writing. And IPVanish gets those speeds with 1,500+ servers in 75+ locations, roughly a third of Nord’s server count.

While I appreciate that IPVanish has a standard kill switch feature, I always use caution when a VPN is headquartered in the US and keep my higher recommendations for people outside of international rings to exchange information like Five Eyes. I’m also not as sure about IPVanish’s leak resistance as other VPNs after reviewers from CNET’s sister publication ZDNet found a partial DNS leak during testing. I also still hope for an independent third party business review.

At $ 10 a month and $ 62.39 a year, it is obviously trying to move you towards its annual program. To get this kind of cost out of NordVPN, you need to go for the $ 3.71 per month ($ 89 total) two-year plan. The policy was also recently changed to offer a full 30-day money-back guarantee. However, the company gets kudos for the recent increase from five to ten concurrent connections.

NordVPN

This heavy hitter stays on our list of the best mobile VPNs for 2020 for many reasons, including his status as the reigning bang-for-buck ratio champion. Undoubtedly, you won’t get a VPN anywhere else that does more than NordVPN, as cheap as NordVPN. Despite a security breach reported last year, you will have a hard time finding another VPN that can do what NordVPN can.

Sure, NordVPN could offer a little more privacy if it increased the number of its servers, but I’m talking about 5,500+ servers in 59 countries, a strict zero-protocol policy, and a jurisdiction in Panama. It’s an encryption powerhouse that recently switched to RAM disk mode and has a feature that allows you to do a VPN in Tor. It’s not only available for iOS and Android, but also for Windows Phone and even BlackBerry.

With all that security, NordVPN doesn’t have a business as fast as it is. In my speed tests, NordVPN performed admirably, reducing our internet speed by an average of 32% (compared to about 65% speed drop with IPVanish), with most VPNs able to reduce the speed by half or more. I found NordVPN’s speeds were consistently high. There were never any sudden drops or service interruptions, and where I expected the VPN to underperform, it has proven to be up to the task.

How much are you paying for all of this? The company doesn’t offer a one-year subscription, but a six-month plan will get you back $ 54. A two-year plan is $ 89 and billed immediately. While the two-year pricing is lower than most of its competitors, it’s still higher than the IPVanish one-year plan, and Nord’s $ 12 monthly pricing is on the high end of its spectrum. And yes, NordVPN also has a 30-day refund policy if you’re not happy with the service.

While a two-year plan is a huge commitment for any data protection service provider, NordVPN has built a reputation for offering fair refunds.
