Jamo

I've been writing audio for over 20 years, but this is my first review of Jamo. I've been waiting too long, and the Studio Series S 803 made me a great starting place. Immediately, these mid-sized speakers have an oversized bass ̵

1; they rock! Better yet, the price is right. There are a couple in the US for $ 299, but you do not have to try hard to sell them for $ 199 a pair. (We've seen them for £ 239 in the UK and AU $ 500 in Australia.)

On the front is a 25mm (1 ") soft dome tweeter inserted into a waveguide and a Inch (127 mm) aluminized fiber woofer and a slot-bass connector. The impedance is rated 8 ohms. The S 803 is available in black, white and walnut-colored vinyl and magnetically attached fabric grilles are included. The cabinet measures 13.9 times 7.5 by 9.9 inches (353 by 191 by 252 mm).

The ports on the back of the S 803 are exceptional. While there are two sets of speaker cable connections, they are not for bi-wiring or biamping. The top connectors are for use with the optional Jamo S8 ATM Dolby Atmos Modular Vertical Channel Speakers (£ 145, – £ 199 per pair), which attach to the top panels of the S 803 speakers. The modules may be useful for S 803 buyers with multichannel home theaters with Jamos S 81 center speaker ($ 150) and subwoofer J 10 ($ 399).

I used two amplifiers with the S 803 speakers, first the Emotiva BasX A-100 ($ 249) and later the downright tiny Dayton Audio DTA Pro ($ 143 ) and both sounded great in all my listening attempts.

The S 803 does not fit into the background. The Jamo engineers did not opt for a neutral sound balance – it's a bright and bass-rich speaker. As I listened, I tamed some of the brightness by tapping the included grids. I also reduced the brightness by carefully using the tone controls on the DTA Pro. The bass is positively big and brave, although the definition lies on the soft side of the neutral. The harder rocking tunes on Son Volt's Notes of Blue album illuminated the S 803. Yes, they can party.

Reggae melodies demonstrated the g-80 suitability of the S 803s for bass, and when I pumped up the bass control of the DTA Pro, the Studio One Dancehall Selection album throbbed with enthusiasm. Ditto for Beck's Odelay (I forgot how great the album is). The legendary jazz drummer Max Roach from the 1980s, a M & # 39; Boom percussion album, was impressive for such a small speaker.

Australian singer and songwriter Julia Jacklin, promising debut album Don Let the Kids Win, sounds too bright on most speakers, and certainly on the S 803. I've found that this applies to a lot of pop and rock music These speakers were spatially large, but focus and detail were only average.

In my stereo home theater listening sessions, I was completely satisfied with S 803 when I saw the terrific First Man about Astronaut Neil. Armstrong The sound mix was truly enveloping in an early scene, as the astronauts did try the first docking maneuver with another spacecraft. The S 803's loudspeakers projected a massive, room-filling sound of the creaking metal of the spacecraft, the beep control, and the breathing of the astronauts. My heart was racing!

The Jamo Studio Series S 803s are competitors, but if you have room for small tower speakers, the Dayton Audio MK442T speakers, with a total value of $ 228 per pair, have even better bass with richer midrange and sweeter treble. Watch out for my review coming soon.
