Many Reddit communities have been destroyed with pro-Trump content, possibly due to compromised moderator accounts

A number of subreddits were taken over and destroyed on Friday, possibly as part of a coordinated campaign. Hackers have reportedly posted messages or changed the design of a subreddit in support of President Donald Trump.

“An investigation into a number of communities destroyed is ongoing,” a Reddit spokesman said in a statement The edge. “It appears that the source of the attacks were compromised moderator accounts. We are working on suspending these accounts and restoring affected communities. ”

It is currently unclear how the accounts were compromised. A post on r / subredditdrama listed dozen of affected subreddits and many were hugely popular, including r / CFB, r / food, r / Japan, r / nfl, r / podcasts, and r / space. It seems that subreddits are back to normal right now, and some moderators have posted messages indicating that their subreddit has been compromised.

The attack on Reddit marks another moment in an increasingly worrying trend for social media accounts to be hijacked. Twitter fell victim to an unprecedented hack in mid-July, which resulted in some of the social network’s most notable accounts being taken over to tweet a bitcoin scam. (Three people were charged in connection with this attack.) Some YouTube accounts have been compromised in the past few days to display “live streams” which are actually Bitcoin scams.
