Mate X: That's how Huawei's foldable 5G phone feels with $ 2,600 and three screens

Huawei wants to be in the foldable cell phone headlight, and with the Mate X it makes a compelling but expensive audition. The main contest: Samsung's Galaxy Fold phone, which has two screens, a total of six cameras and unfolds in the middle to open a 7.3-inch tablet. Huawei Mate X – that is "Ex", not "Ten" – has three options for use on an 8-inch screen, three cameras and an interesting design that gives you a handy base for one-handed operation.

The $ 2,300 Mate X (which converts to $ 2,600, $ 2,000, or $ 3,660) is also 5G-eligible, while the Galaxy Fold is available for $ 1

,980 in 4G or 5G configurations is. Huawei will launch the Mate X in mid-2019, while Samsung's Galaxy Fold will be available on April 26. Huawei has not announced any carrier partners yet.

Folding phones offer a chance to shake the coastal industry At the same time, they effectively double the screen area you need to use on your phone. As foldable phones are phone-tablet hybrids, they can be priced higher, which is an important source of revenue for companies looking to make a higher profit in a weakening market. But this new era of bendable screens also represents the wild west of the phone design: a phone could flip in or out, in the middle or on two sides or even bend over like a wrist on your wrist . At this early stage, companies test what a foldable phone means. At the moment everything is possible.

Huawei's vision for the Mate X is a phone that you usually use in the "closed" position, but it opens when you want to be entertained or more productive. On the back there is a screen that could be useful for selfies: The four rear cameras of the phone were coded with Leica.

The Home Screen is a 6.6-inch display that Huawei says is the most used by you. Unfold it to get an 8-inch edge-to-edge OLED display with no notch (but there is a camera). When folded, the back panel is a slightly smaller 6.4-inch screen and a sidebar with the rear camera assembly. In the open position, the sidebar becomes a grippy handle that Huawei calls "Falcon Wing" due to its swooping shape. The idea is to hold the Mate X with one hand and tap and swipe with the other hand. Close the phone again and one side of it will follow the handle for a flat look. And yes, there is still a bendable hinge.

My colleague Roger Cheng had time to talk on the phone and found that while the phone is large, it feels light but definitely will be a two-handed experience. Here are his thoughts:

The Mate X closes as promised, with little space between the two sides of the phone. Folding the phone is a bit scary and the movement is a bit stiff, but Richard Yu, CEO of Consumer, says it has tested 100,000 times. When the phone is closed, it knows which side of the device you are on. It will automatically reverse the pages when you face it.

It feels pretty light on a device this size. The spine, in which the camera is located, works in the unfolded state as a fairly good ergonomic handle. But good luck folding with one hand – I almost dropped it. When folded, it felt a bit thick. It is a bulkiness that is inevitable.

Apps seem to be running smoothly. As with the Galaxy Fold, the phone automatically switches your app to the larger display when you open the screen. I saw CNN, Chrome, and YouTube on the device, all running smoothly and taking advantage of the larger screen.

The demo device they are showing has three cameras. However, the finished phone will have a fourth camera, which will be shown next month with the P30.

Huawei has also developed a case that covers the sides and back of the Mate X in its folded form, leaving an open window for the 6.6-inch display. In some countries this might be the case.

5G speeds are a hot topic for Huawei, and the Mate X uses the in-house processor Kirin 980 and the Balong 5000 5G modem chip. For now, Huawei says the Mate X will download content four times faster than the current 4G connection, which is about 1 GB in 3 seconds. The Oscar-nominated film Roma on Netflix is available for download at under 700MB so theoretically it should be downloaded to the Mate X in about 2 seconds.

The Mate X has the Galaxy Fold In terms of battery capacity, it surpasses the capacity of 4,500 mAh on two batteries, one on each side of the flip screen. Samsung's Galaxy Fold has a total capacity of 4,380 mAh between its two lobes. As we know through testing, raw capacity gives you the upper hand, but we do not know which performance is better in real life unless we test it side by side.
