Since the Road Safety Insurance Institute began to include headlight evaluations in its awards evaluation process, spotlights alone have prevented more than a few automakers from receiving any of the IIHS awards. Now we can add Ram's latest recording to this list.
The IIHS has just released their test data for the 2019 Ram 1500 and things generally look great. The truck achieved top marks in all crash tests, including the brand new passenger-side test with small overlaps. Even in the subcategories of individual tests, the Ram 1
With optional equipment, the Ram 1500 also achieved the highest rating in its Crash Prevention Technology rating. When equipped with the optional Advanced Safety Group package, the 1500 avoids crashes at speeds of 12 and 25 miles per hour.
And then there are the headlights. The base halogen reflector headlamps received Marginal's second lowest rating due to insufficient curve coverage. The higher reflector LED reflectors were also classified as marginal due to insufficient corner coverage and low beam. Even worse, the LED projector headlights were the most expensive strips that had received a poor rating for excessive glare.
If the 2019 Ram 1500 headlamp would have been considered acceptable, the Ram 1500 would have been awarded the IIHS Top Safety Pick. If these headlights had received a good rating, the truck would have received the highest accolade, Top Safety Pick +. Currently, only one large pickup – the Honda Ridgeline 2018-2019 – has the designation Top Safety Pick.
